Jesy Nelson and Zion Foster split due to the toll of the “traumatic experience” of their twin babies being diagnosed with a rare genetic condition, the former Little Mix star has said.

The couple recently ended their four-year relationship just months after they got engaged. This came after their twin daughters had been diagnosed with SMA Type 1, a rare condition which causes muscle wastage.

And it’s as a result of this strain that the couple have parted ways, Jesy has confirmed. Speaking in an interview this week, the 34-year-old singer said: “We have been through such a traumatic experience and for us, our girls are our main priority and our main focus.

“We want to give them the most positive, happy and uplifting time and energy and because we have both been through such a traumatic experience, the energy wasn’t right between us, which is understandable. We are still friends and we are still united in co-parenting our daughters, they are our main focus, that’s all we can do, be the best possible parents we can right now.”

Jesy, who is from Romford, east London, told the Daily Mail the dynamic between she and Zion, 27, shifted and their priority is now co-parenting their daughters. It follows Jesy’s complicated pregnancy, during which she learned her daughters were monochorionic diamniotic (MCDA) identical twins, and had twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS), a rare condition where both babies share a placenta.

The star, who was part of Little Mix until 2020, was relieved when they were born healthy, but her joy was shattered six months later when the SMA diagnosis arrived. Since then, the Mirror’s campaign for every newborn to get a simple £5 blood test on the NHS to detect for SMA has gained momentum. The condition causes progressive muscle weakness and wasting.

Speaking to the Mail, Jesy continued: “I am taking each day as it comes because I feel like right now, especially with the girls’ diagnosis, it’s all I can really do. If I try to look too far into the future, I will drive myself crazy. The girls are doing really well and they’re happy, that’s all I can really ask for.”

Jesy’s breakup feels even more poignant ahead of the launch of her Prime Video series, Jesy Nelson: Life After Little Mix, which documents every twist and turn of the former X Factor star’s pregnancy. Viewers will see the close bond Jesy once shared with Zion, an R&B singer, whom she described just months before their split as her “best friend”.
