A new trailer for “The Drama” finds Zendaya and Robert Pattinson playing a couple whose wedding plans implode in the days before they say “I do” because of a deep, dark secret Zendaya’s character has been hiding for years.
A24 will release writer-director Kristoffer Borgli’s film in theaters April 3. Mamoudou Athie, Alana Haim and Hailey Gates also star, with “Succession” alum Zoë Winters appearing as a wedding photographer.
The film centers on Emma Harwood (Zendaya) and Charlie Thompson (Pattinson), whose relationship takes a devastating turn just before their ceremony. Emma is a bookstore employee from Louisiana with a Boston University English degree who works at Mission Books. Charlie is a British museum director who earned his art history doctorate from Tufts University and oversees the Cambridge Art Museum. The character details emerged through a fictional engagement announcement A24 placed in the Boston Globe as part of the film’s marketing campaign.
Borgli returns to A24 after directing 2023’s “Dream Scenario,” the dark comedy that landed Nicolas Cage a Golden Globe nomination. “The Drama” is his fourth directorial effort. Ari Aster, Lars Knudsen and Tyler Campellone produce.
It will be a busy year for the headlining duo as this is the first of three upcoming films pairing Zendaya and Pattinson. They’ll next appear in Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” arriving July 17 from Universal Pictures, before reuniting in Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Three” on Dec. 18 from Warner Bros.
Production shot throughout Massachusetts — including Boston’s Newbury Street and the Addison Gallery of American Art in Andover — along with New York City and Los Angeles.
For Zendaya, “The Drama” follows her starring turn in Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers.” She’s due back on television in Season 3 of HBO’s “Euphoria,” where she plays two-time Emmy-winning role Rue, and will appear in Marvel’s “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” on July 31. Pattinson was most recently seen in Lynne Ramsay’s “Die My Love” opposite Jennifer Lawrence.
