John Cena is on the run after getting the gang back together in Matchbox The Movie.
Apple TV has released the first-look images for Sam Hargrave’s action-adventure based on the iconic toys from Mattel, and set a global release date of Oct. 9. The news was revealed on Tuesday during the streamer’s press day at Santa Monica’s Barker Hangar.
Matchbox The Movie is described as “a globetrotting adventure” centering on a group of close friends since childhood. Their lives are upended when an undercover CIA agent Sean, played by Cena, who is their long-absent leader, returns to their small town. He unwittingly gets them mixed up in a frantic international pursuit to save the world. Cena stars opposite Jessica Biel, Sam Richardson, Teyonah Parris and Arturo Castro. Corey Stoll, Bill Camp, Danai Gurira and Golshifteh Faranhani round out the cast.

Matchbox The Movie is an Apple Original Film that comes from Skydance Media and Mattel Films. David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger are producing for Skydance alongside Robbie Brenner and Ynon Kreiz through Mattel Films as well as Jules Daly. Patrick Newall and Elizabeth Bassin are executive producers.
Hargrave, who directed from a script by David Coggeshall (The Family Plan), has a long and diversified resumé that includes work as an actor, writer, director, producer, stunt performer and more. His directing work includes Extraction, Extraction II and The Last Frontier. Cena recently starred in Peacemaker, Heads of State and in a cameo on Pluribus.
