Olivia Colman has revealed she has always described herself to her husband as a gay man, as she opened up on her identity.

The 52-year-old actress is best known for her roles in The Crown and Heartstopper, and is currently doing promotional work for her next upcoming gig.

Queer flick, Jimpa, had its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival last month and tells the tale of a mother, and her nonbinary teenager who travel to visit her gay father.

Nonbinary means that the person identifies outside the traditional male or female bracket.

Speaking to Them, Olivia revealed she has always ‘felt sort of nonbinary,’ adding that she ‘never felt massively feminine in my being female.’

She shared: ‘I’ve always described myself to my husband as a gay man and he goes, “Yeah, I get that.”‘

The actress added that she doesn’t spend much time with people who are ‘staunchly heterosexual’ and the men she frequents are in touch with ‘all sides of themselves.’

Olivia has been married to screenwriter and film producer Ed Sinclair, with the pair sharing three children — Finn, 20, Hall, 18, and a ten-year-old daughter.

Speaking to the publication, Olivia explained that she and Ed ‘take turns to be the “strong one” or the one who needs a little bit of gentleness.’

Last year, the couple celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary, with Olivia telling the Good Hang podcast of how they had been together some 31 years.

The key to their successful relationship, she revealed, was that they are ‘not big fighters.’

She shared: ‘We have learned over the years — but really late on actually — to sometimes [think], if that was annoying, just wait.

‘It doesn’t work for everyone, I know that, but I think it’s much better to wait until the calmer moments to go, “Can we talk about that moment?”‘

Ed had dabbled in acting before turning to screenwriting and film producing, and is the brains behind 2021 Sky drama series Landscapers, which starred Olivia across from David Thewlis.

More recently he produced The Roses, also starring his wife, this time alongside Benedict Cumberbatch.
