LCD Soundsystem are facing backlash in response to their 2017 single “Oh Baby” soundtracking a Super Bowl commercial for Elon Musk’s Starlink, a satellite internet service operated by his SpaceX company.

In the ad, far-flung landscapes shift in and out of view as “Oh Baby” plays in the background, while the song’s beloved, blippy undulations carry a repetitive message of “fast, affordable internet.”

Some of LCD Soundsystem’s fans have expressed disappointment with the band supporting Musk’s company, even if indirectly. Multiple Reddit threads have cropped up since the Super Bowl, with scores of commenters expressing their disappointment in the band.

“I’m a huge huge huge LCD fan, seen them 4 times live, seen every known interview etc.,” one Redditor wrote. “But this is undoubtedly disappointing, if they’re running low on money, make an album?? Make some more singles? Don’t help a Nazis company by supplementing your music and normalising it. There are no excuses. There are ways to monetise your music, or even hot take, maybe start investing money into DFA and get some new artists? So many options at their hand. There’s no excuses, period.”

“Damn I guess they really are losing their edge,” another user succinctly wrote, cheekily referring to the band’s 2002 debut single “Losing My Edge.”

This isn’t the first time LCD Soundsystem have disappointed their fanbase. In 2022, the band performed at Bored Ape Yacht Club’s ApeFest, a members-only event that exclusively catered to crypto bros. Not only that, the performance came while the much-hyped crypto market was in the middle of its predictable crash.

LCD Soundsystem’s representatives have not responded to Consequence’s request for comment as of publishing.
