I think because so much of the way society is viewed is still through the male gaze. And the male gaze tends to heavily romanticize the "friends to lovers" trope. We were also conditioned (again, by patriarchy) to believe that deep love can and should only be between romantic partners, instead of learning that love will take many different forms over our lifetimes. Because if woman are taught that we should seek love in friendships and not just romantic relationships, then we can't be as easily controlled and manipulated.
Women have the kind of friendships that men can only have in a foxhole….
That's because a woman's entire life is a battleground of survival.
And some of us go through life without ever having a friendship this close.
I never had a friendship with a woman who didn't constantly insult or betray me or let me down until I was over 40 years old. And even then it's really a struggle. Because if you're a woman and you're highly capable everyone wants to obliterate you… Unless you're very thin and fragile and weak and they don't see you as a threat….
