While many people had no idea she was there, Matty Healy’s famous model and actress girlfriend Gabbriette Bechtel was in Newcastle for Sunday for Sammy, sharing a number of backstage snapshots from her day in the Toon. And it looked like she had a total ball!
There was a lot of excitement at the end of last year when it was announced that The 1975’s frontman Matty, son of Sunday for Sammy veterans Tim Healy and Denise Welch, would be performing at the much loved event’s 2026 comeback, years after he took to the stage at its old home of the City Hall to perform a terrific cover of Hallelujah.
Matty arrived on stage at the Utilita Arena on Sunday, right near the end of a near four hour extravaganza that also saw his dad share a stage with brother Louis and fellow Auf Wiedersehen Pet favourite Christopher Fairbank, for a sketch all about the builders working on the restoration of the Tyne Bridge. Matty made his appearance, right after a moving tribute to Sunday for Sammy legend Geoff Wonfor, the man who was the beating heart of the event for many years, before his death at the end of 2022.

Matty looked visibly moved as he began his afternoon set with a cover of James Taylor’s Carolina on my Mind and then performed surprise cover of The Las’ There She Goes and 1975 tracks It’s Not Living If It’s Not With You and About You, as he was joined by the group’s musicians John Waugh and Jamie Squire.
The set also brought one of the big shocks of the day, when Lewis Capaldi walked on stage to sing Someone You Loved to send excitement levels inside the Utilita Arena through the roof. And standing by the stage to see it was Gabbriette, the famous model who also had a role in the reboot of I Know What You Did Last Summer last year and appeared in the viral music video for Charli XCX’s 360.
Gabrielle shared videos of her day at Sunday for Sammy on both her Instagram and TikTok, including one of her dancing around a dressing room as Matty and Louis looked on in the background. While she didn’t star in this year’s show, Matty’s mam Denise was there and joined everyone for the Run for Home finale at the end of the afternoon performance, after pal Angela Lonsdale had given her a ‘get well soon’ shout out on stage earlier on.
