    1. So looks like he is bullying the poster & trying to shut him down for a pretty mild comment. Buying a nearly $5 mil ranch with the upkeep and maintenance that will require to boot does not make sense, nor does it sound anything like folks who are financially destitute.

But that friend is not addressing the core issue or answering the question as to why anyone wouldn’t move to a much smaller, normal home to keep expenses down if they are supposedly “out of funds.” Like everyone else does to limit their expenses rather than overextending themselves to live in their ideal dream house. But I guess if you can get other people to fund it…

Dude bought a $4 million mansion before he died. The family had the money for a funeral. They’re taking advantage of the public.

I do not pretend to know the family’s situation but at the end of the day, if you recently came into possession of a 4 million dollar asset, then that should probably be sold before you accept money from strangers who are likely worse off than yourself.

Tbf this kind of behaviour baffles me. The same happens with streamers, they are already filthy rich yet asking for donations on stream from a guy in a one bed sleeping on a mattress on the floor, and they still give it. It’s like the world is under some kind of mind control from celebrities.

Please explain precisely how this was not a grift, instead of insulting us. It certainly looks like one.

When you beg money from people you have to expect they might have an opinion about that

    6. > I am one of the Van Der Beek’s closet friends and the headlines are fake AF you have no idea wtf you’re talking about,”

I had to check and, yes, he said he was one of their “closet” friends.

    7. I don’t know anything about the American insurance system. But wouldn’t he have a pretty solid plan through SAG-AFTRA?

    8. Their cash cow is dead, this is their last gasp before selling assets or working for a living.

Nobody is saying it’s not incredibly sad and tragic that he passed away in the fashion he did and Young. People’s concern comes from the fact that a donation pool of over $2 million to essentially fund a certain type of lifestyle isn’t it. Their house is nearly $5M. They have another property they rent out in California.

What would’ve been a probably smarter financial decision is to sell the home, downsize into a modest, comfortable home, and go from there. Keeping up with a lifestyle that’s not attainable right now just isn’t..I don’t know

I get the upset everyone is having over a famous person “needing” to fundraise over something like this. It’s additional confirmation of both entitlement and a truly broken system that serves no one except shareholders and venture capitalists.

    11. What a way to quickly destroy any goodwill they got! I wonder if they talked about setting one up before he died.

    12. Living off him in life and not now living off him in death.

Rich people can piss all the way off.

    13. Funnily enough I think anti vaxxers should STFU when they don’t know what the f*** they’re talking about!

    14. alwaysrecession on

I can see the wife or their family and friends launching GFM for various life events for each of their 6 kids for the public to pay.

    15. I have friends who can barely afford housing. I don’t care about this guy’s family. They’ve done nothing for me and they haven’t lifted a finger for ANYONE ELSE who couldn’t afford a home.

    16. BurningMansions on

      This will be his legacy.

Good job on his friends and family for making it known they are shitty humans and we now have to assume he was also.

    17. It’s funny. My mom died of cancer when I was 16, leaving my dad with hundreds of thousands in medical debt. We spent every penny we had trying to save her. Because of this, he, as a dentist, has no retirement and we all had to take out student loans to even get through college. I didn’t even get a scholarship.

I am having to take care of him even now as a 38 year old. Yet the rich people get richer. I have no sympathy for this grift of the general population.

    18. LineImpossible3958 on

It feels like the Van Der Beek’e scammed fans for an extra 2.6 million, while owning multiple properties worth millions. It’s sad he died, but grifting on the way out is low.

    19. Logical-Knee-9046 on

      Oh dear friend of grifters,

People are free to question public begging ALL DAY LONG.

Notice it says “can’t know” … like we can’t add 2+2.

So inform us or STFU yourself.

      TIA,

      General Public

    20. Im_TroyMcClure on

Their situation is they want to continue living the same quality of life without the income of moderately successful Hollywood actor. You don’t need to live on a 5 million dollar Texas ranch.

    21. DannyDaVito662 on

I personally would not donate money to a celebrity’s gofund me. Even if they’re not as famous anymore or their funds have significantly dropped, they are still a part of that industry, they still have connections available to them, friends, etc. Just can’t see myself ever doing it.

    22. Hufflepuffpassmethej on

His wife liking a Trump post back in January tells me everything I need to know about these grifters

    23. itsfrankgrimesyo on

the public might not know everything but some things are public record and facts are facts.
Regardless of what we don’t know, what we *do* know is that this family is not in destitute or about to go homeless.

    24. Yea its sad. My wife and I needed help keeping our house and food and, couldn’t get anything. Meanwhile rich ppl get more money

    25. Why are some of these people talking like no one could possibly know what they’re going through, as if millions of people don’t die from cancer every year…

    26. Yeah if I was dumb enough to think I could pray away my ass cancer, then wait around using failing holistic treatments, I’d probably be friends with people just as stupid
