In a new royal biography, William and Catherine: The Monarchy’s New Era, author Russell Myers, sheds light on how Princess Kate Middleton and William, 43, really felt when Harry, 41, and Meghan, 44, stepped back from royal life in 2020. Myers claims Kate, 44, took a more practical view, reportedly seeing Harry’s departure as somewhat inevitable because of the long-standing “heir and spare” dynamic within the royal family.
William, on the other hand, was said to be much more emotionally affected. According to the book, he was deeply saddened, not just professionally, but personally, by the loss of the close relationship he once had with his younger brother.

“When I wrote my last book [Endgame] I was having conversations with people very close to Harry, and one of the things that were shared with me was that Harry had reached out to an intermediary, kind of mutual friend between himself and his brother, hoping that would allow them to have some kind of conversation together, maybe with someone present, or through whatever channel,” Scobie, coauthor of Royal Spin with Robin Benway, exclusively tells Us Weekly. “It didn’t happen. It wasn’t received in any way whatsoever, and so from what I see now from the outside, it looks like that stone wall is still up. Unless the attitudes change on both sides, we’re never going to find any way to resolution.”
William and Harry have been estranged for years. In January 2023, Harry opened up about tensions with William in his tell-all memoir, Spare, including an alleged physical altercation between the siblings over Meghan.

Harry wrote that William called Meghan “difficult” and “rude” during a 2019 visit to his home, which sparked the confrontation. Despite their ongoing estrangement, Harry said in an ITV interview at the time that he would “like to have my brother back” amid their family feud.
“When Endgame came out, there had been zero communication for quite some time,” Scobie tells Us. “And we certainly have heard nothing more in the press since.”
