Just over a decade ago, an upcoming 19-year-old actor named Timothee Chalamet jumped from a brief stint on Showtime’s “Homeland” to cinema with a role as the son of Matthew McConaughey’s character in Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar”.
Today? Chalamet is now one of the most in-demand actors in the world, someone who can ‘open’ a film these days and has numerous major studio and arthouse hits under his belt from “Dune” to “Wonka” to “Marty Supreme”.
Chalamet and McConaughey reunited recently at Variety and CNN’s town hall event at the University of Texas in Austin with the pair talking about their work. The discussion, at one point, turned towards Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Three”.
Chalamet says with this being the final entry for Villeneuve and himself in the franchise, it has allowed them to sneak in a ‘curveball’ with what is coming:
“Especially on this third one, all the great s— you see on screen is from freedom of movement and freedom of choice. And with Denis, we really had a good rhythm. It’s the eeriest one. It’s a big swing.”
He also confirmed the new film will feature an ornithopter sequence like the first film, but “this time I was way more geared up”. He says his approach this time, going in knowing it was his last one, made him focus hard:
“I didn’t want to be complacent about a single moment. Everything was sacred, and it was my last time doing a ‘Dune’ film, so I really wanted to treat it as sacred. Because people can get complacent, but I was more intense on the third one. It felt like that was the natural momentum, so I wanted to push against that as hard as I could.”
The discussion covered a number of topics, most notably AI, with McConaughey recently protecting his voice and likeness legally in regards to it. He suggests (via Variety) that in five years there could well be best AI film or best AI actor categories at some awards shows.
The interview has been cut together as a special which aired tonight on CNN and is available by the app.
