Rowan Atkinson will again play the world’s most confident but also the world’s most ineptly competent spy in a new film that may be Johnny English’s most perilous case ever—–if he could only get out of his own way. When every single British spy’s identity has been revealed due to a massive cyber-attack that exposed all MI7 agents’ identities except for the only analog dinosaur using paper files and rotary phones, Johnny English becomes the only man available for MI7 to send after Christian Bale’s character, Marcus Kane—a tech-savvy billionaire with a charming public image who secretly wants to take control of global communication through satellite systems that every country leader has agreed to use without knowing the true intentions behind them. Also entering the picture is Anne Hathaway as Agent Ophelia Cross—the American CIA operative who is sent to “babysit” Johnny English so that England’s last spy does not cause an international incident while stumbling towards some degree of success through blind luck that appears genius to those watching from the outside.
This installment succeeds because the danger escalates to the point where the consequences of failing are literally apocalyptic while the comedy remains constant based on English’s inability to realize that the danger is there even when people are actively shooting at him. Atkinson will continue to provide that unique physical comedy as someone who is always confident regardless of the fact that his assumptions are always proven to be catastrophically wrong, thereby causing unintentional damage to Marcus Kane’s plans, while English attempts to accomplish whatever mission objective is least likely to have anything to do with the actual mission objectives. Bale provides a surprisingly menacing portrayal of a villain who is getting increasingly frustrated that his elaborate plans keep being ruined by someone who cannot understand basic technology, let alone the complex traps being set, resulting in comedic gold as Bale plays the straight man reacting to English’s inexplicable successes. As Hathaway watches English stumble into success despite having no reason to be successful, her growing frustration results in a partnership that is formed by combining professional competence with bumbling chaos; she tries to protect him from himself while realizing that English’s successes are often more threatening to them than the dangers they are fighting against. Look for more spectacular action scenes where English misinterprets everything while managing to survive due to a combination of pure dumb luck and underestimation by his opponents of just how intelligent he truly is, as well as malfunctioning gadgets which result in English accidentally solving problems he did not even know existed, and a final scene showing that sometimes the best spy is the one who is too stupid to read the same script that everyone else is reading from.
