King Charles III succeeded the British throne on 8th September 2022 following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Prince William is now first in line to the throne.

The British royal family’s line of succession is ranked by the individuals eligible to inherit the Crown.

After Prince William, his children (Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis) follow.

Modern rules now allow the eldest child to succeed regardless of gender. In 2011, Commonwealth leaders agreed to change succession laws to allow sons and daughters of any future UK monarch to have equal right to the throne. The ban on the monarch marrying a Roman Catholic was also lifted.

Despite stepping down as a working royal in 2020, Prince Harry is still fifth in line to the British throne. His children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, are also in line behind him.

As it currently stands, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor is eighth in line to the throne. The government is considering removing him.

A statement on the official Royal Family website states: “The succession to the throne is regulated not only through descent, but also by Parliamentary statute. The order of succession is the sequence of members of the Royal Family in the order in which they stand in line to the throne.

“The basis for the succession was determined in the constitutional developments of the seventeenth century, which culminated in the Bill of Rights (1689) and the Act of Settlement (1701).”
