Jodie Whittaker’s 2017 British drama movie Journeyman has become available to stream for free. The acclaimed film comes from director and writer Paddy Considine, and features him as a champion middleweight boxer.

However, when his character Matty Burton sustains a serious head injury in his last big fight, it has a huge impact on his life.

Starring Doctor Who’s Whittaker in the role of wife Emma, as well as Pillion’s Anthony Welsh, Save Me’s Paul Popplewell and Line of Duty’s Tony Pitts, Journeyman is available to stream now on Channel 4 for free with ads after airing last night on Film4.

The movie sits at an impressive 85% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 39 reviews, with The Sun calling it “a truly astounding piece of work”.

“A boxing drama with a difference, Journeyman packs a powerful punch – and reminds us not to take Paddy Considine for granted,” added Empire, while The Mirror called it “a knockout”.

“Few British actors can lay claim to the kind of performance which we have come to expect and appreciate from Paddy Considine,” wrote CineVue, adding it is “further proof of his impressive versatility”.

However, The Independent said that while Journeyman is “a well-crafted and intelligent drama”, it “stumbles when it tries to find a rousing and upbeat ending from subject matter that is innately so grim”.

Whittaker is best known for leading Doctor Who, and has been keeping busy since her departure in 2022, starring recently in shows such as Netflix’s Toxic Town and ITV’s Frauds.

Last year, the star reflected on the pressure of taking on the iconic sci-fi role, especially as the first woman to play the Doctor.

“If Peter [Capaldi] hadn’t been good as the Doctor, it would only have reflected on him,” she told The Times. “Whereas I felt that if I wasn’t very good at this, I’ve f**ked it for other actors. I think it’s completely unacceptable if that was the case, but that’s how I felt.”

Recalling receiving sexist trolling, she further shared: “It was a noisy few [people]. Rage is always really loud – compliments are much quieter. But also, that show doesn’t have a comparison.

“It’s part of all our vocabularies – the Tardis, Daleks, exterminate! And everyone’s Doctor until then was a white man. They are very different actors, but they all fit a specific mould – and I didn’t.”

Journeyman is streaming now on Channel 4.
