In a recent interview with io9 regarding his upcoming blockbuster, Project Hail Mary, Ryan Gosling was asked about his other major space film, Star Wars: Starfighter. Gosling has officially begun to receive the Star Wars treatment, wherein every single interview now for, maybe the rest of his career, he will get asked about Star Wars in some way or another. With no need of the paycheck, can you blame the man for avoiding franchises?

In the interview, io9 asked why a major star such as Gosling who was has likely been offered more than one massive franchise role over the course of his career, but who turned them all down, finally accepted a role into one of Hollywood’s most notable franchises. Gosling responded:

It was Shawn’s [Levy] enthusiasm and his vision and the script, and I just avoided these things because they never felt right. And I’m glad I did because I feel like, [similar to] a book like this, [it was] worth waiting for. And it is like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

Gosling, of course, refers to the Project Hail Mary novel by Andy Weir. While he has historically avoided franchises, he seems to have some affection for science fiction having also starred in Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049. Starfighter may just be the right combination of Barbie-like fun and hard hitting science fiction that Gosling gravitates toward. Either way, we’re glad to have him aboard.

So far, critics have positive things to say about what they’ve seen of Starfighter, which also boasts a stacked cast, including: Mia Goth, Matt Smith, and Amy Adams, among others.  Stay tuned for the latest and greatest on Starfighter, The Mandalorian and Grogu and more.
