The Princess of Wales has stunned royal fans with her Welsh-speaking skills as she joined Prince William in sending a Happy St David’s Day to everyone in Wales.

Catherine has never spoken in Welsh before, but did not disappoint in the video message posted on the couple’s social media channels.

Both wearing daffodils, the couple spoke to the camera in Welsh, with English subtitles appearing below.

William started off the message saying: “To everyone in Wales, a very Happy St David’s Day!”

Concluding the video, Catherine said: “Wishing you a day full of celebration with family and friends.”

Royal fans have been raining down praise on the couple’s message in Welsh, which has garnered nearly 20,000 likes on Instagram in under half an hour.

One commenter described the pair as a “class act!” while another added: “You two are great ambassadors for our United Kingdom.”

Despite it only being the first time Catherine has done a message in Welsh, another credited her pronunciation, saying: “The princess actually sounds Welsh.”

William and Catherine have recently been in Wales, travelling to Powys to honour the Welsh county’s remarkable record of community service.

Powys holds the distinction of having more volunteers per head of population than any other county in the United Kingdom, making it a fitting destination for the royal couple’s celebration of grassroots community efforts.

Their Royal Highnesses embarked on a tour of three locations across the county, beginning at The Hanging Gardens in Llanidloes before moving on to Oriel Davies art gallery in Newtown and concluding with a gathering of volunteer organisations at Hafan yr Afon.

The Hanging Gardens serves as a creative and community-focused space dedicated to building resilience among residents of Llanidloes and the surrounding area.

The venue operates as a multifaceted hub offering a café, performing arts centre, indoor market, community garden, kitchens and workshop facilities, all centred on principles of sustainable living and artistic expression.

During their stop, the Prince and Princess of Wales met those who volunteer their time to keep the centre operational.

The royal couple also took part in several of the venue’s distinctive workshops and activities.

Among these was involvement in preparations for the upcoming St David’s Day celebrations, allowing Their Royal Highnesses to engage directly with the community spirit that has earned Powys its reputation as the nation’s volunteering capital.

At Oriel Davies, a contemporary art gallery in rural Newtown, the couple viewed work produced through a project funded by the Alexandra Reinhardt Memorial Award, which focuses on supporting the mental health and confidence of local children and young people.

Artist Nicky Arscott has led regular creative workshops encouraging social connections through engagement with nature and celebration of diverse cultures.

The Prince and Princess of Wales observed an exhibition of artwork created by participants before joining a workshop session in progress, followed by time spent with a Welsh learners group practising the language in the gallery café.

The day concluded at Hafan yr Afon, a cultural and heritage centre managed by Open Newtown, where a celebration brought together volunteer groups and community champions from across the region, organised by PAVO, the Powys Association of Voluntary Organisations.
