Talk about good timing. The hockey drama “Youngblood” arrives in theaters Friday, March 6 in the wake of the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics and its thrilling gold medal wins for the U.S. women’s and men’s teams.

The movie debuted in 2025 at the Toronto International Film Festival, which described it this way: “With its fierce intelligence and thoughtful take on masculinity and race, ‘Youngblood’ is a far cry from most sports movies.”

The sports saga has a gripping story and compelling action on the ice like its namesake, 1986’s “Youngblood” starring Rob Lowe. But this version reworks the story to focus on a young Black hockey star from Detroit (played by Ashton James) who must face tough choices on how to succeed on the ice and off.

What is ‘Youngblood’ about?

Motor City rising hockey star Dean Youngblood, who learned the sport from his tough, demanding father, Blane, lands a spot on a Canadian team, the Hamilton Mustangs. Despite his talent, Dean earns a reputation for toxic arrogance. The volatile Dean finds a friend in team captain Denis Sutton and begins to learn a different approach to the game. After another player injures Sutton in an effort to rattle Dean, he must decide what kind of hockey player he wants to become.

Who stars in ‘Youngblood’?

Ashton James, who has appeared in “Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent” and the AppleTV+ limited series “Five Days at Memorial,” plays Dean Youngblood. Veteran star Blair Underwood plays Dean’s father, Blane Youngblood. Newcomer Henri Richer-Picard plays Mustangs team captain Denis Sutton.

What inspired the movie?

The new “Youngblood” is a contemporary reimagining of the 1986 cult hit with the same title. It starred teen heartthrob Rob Lowe as a Canadian hockey prodigy, Patrick Swayze as the captain of the team and a promising newcomer at the time named Keanu Reeves.

Who is the director?

“Youngblood” is directed by Hubert Davis, who helmed the 2022 documentary “Black Ice,” which looked at racism in hockey and the past and present players who have endured it.
