SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – At Gavin Bolin Hair & Style on South Campbell, it’s another busy day for Connor Provenzano.
“I’m just a barber, man,” Connor joked. “I kind of just show up here. I love what I do. Cut hair. I’m kind of boring, if I’m being honest.”
The Reeds Spring barber started at Gavin Bolin’s shop a year ago, just after they moved to a new store.
“I didn’t have any clients,” Connor said.
“We’re both taking a risk on the growth there,” owner Gavin Bolin said. “That first couple weeks, you know, a lot of heart and a lot of drive (from Connor), but it was fairly slow.”
“But then I picked up the camera,” Connor added.
Like so many young people, Connor was familiar with social media, and thought if you film it, they will come.
So Connor Cutz was born on TikTok.
“I just figured I’d post on social media to get some new clients,” Connor said. “And one thing led to another, and now we’re here.”
“It was seriously like a stick of dynamite just went off and a lot of growth,” Gavin said.
Connor Cutz videos on TikTok started to gain traction. They were shared almost as fast as they were uploaded. Connor’s hook? Just being himself.
“I went from having three clients to that first month after that I had over 500 clients,” Connor said. “So it was in the span of a month that I was fully booked out.”
After one year on TikTok, Connor has almost 79,000 followers and 1.7 million likes.
So far, the record for longest trip for a haircut? Dallas, Texas. That’s a seven hour drive just to sit in Connor’s chair and talk.
“Why do they do it,” Chad Plein asked about the clients coming to Connor?
“I think partially is the social media aspect,” Connor answered. “They get to be on the videos. They get to show all their friends the videos. But I also think I do good haircuts, so they get a good haircut out of it as well.
“I love talking to people,” Connor continued. “So the fact that I get to have, last year I had like 1,500 new clients, that’s 1,500 new people that I get to talk to.”
“I’m an old dog stuck in my ways at this point and it’s been cool,” Gavin said about Connor’s work. “It’s all rubbed off on each other.”
Even Gavin now records his clients and posts them to social media.
“Not as much trying to build a clientele anymore, but it has been a cool creative outlet for me,” Gavin said.
Connor’s creative idea has led to business for others at the barber shop as well.
“There’s been a lot of times where Connor may have cut the son and I’ve cut the father,” Gavin said. “And that’s pretty cool too. That’s definitely the heart of our barbershop is like a generational barbershop. People that can come in and have that kind of neighborhood barbershop feel. And so that’s just been really cool to be a part of.”
“It’s awesome, honestly. I can’t imagine myself having a different job,” Connor said.
