John F. Kennedy Jr.’s childhood friend Sasha Chermayeff discussed attending JFK Jr.’s wedding to Carolyn Bessette in 1996.

According to Chermayeff, there was no tension between Caroline and JFK Jr.’s sister Caroline Kennedy.

Her comments come after the wedding episode of in Ryan Murphy’s Love Story.

Ryan Murphy’s Love Story has left viewers completely fascinated by the ’90s-era romance between the late John F. Kennedy Jr. and his wife Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy. In the latest episode of the Hulu show, fans were treated to Murphy’s interpretation of their September 1996 wedding ceremony. However according to JFK Jr.’s childhood friend, Sasha Chermayeff, who attended the intimate wedding, things didn’t play out like they did on screen.

Episode 6, “The Wedding,” shows rising tensions between Bessette-Kennedy and JFK Jr.’s sister, Caroline Kennedy. However, according to, Chermayeff, the vibe was much more peaceful in real life.

“At [the wedding], there wasn’t a feeling of tension at all. It was just not there,” Chermayeff told Page Six. She later noted that “people knew that there was some tensions between them,” though Chermayeff claims, “it wasn’t really apparent at the wedding.”

In Love Story, Caroline and Carolyn don’t exactly hit it off. Caroline has trouble accepting Carolyn’s desire for a private wedding, leading Carolyn to pacify her with a maid of honor proposal. In the show, the tension between Carolyn and her sister-in-law-to-be continues in the weeks leading up to the wedding.

On screen, Carolyn’s friends and sisters judge Caroline for refusing to help Carolyn get ready on her wedding day, but Chermayeff says that probably didn’t happen. “I’m not convinced that [Caroline] had to do anything like that,” she said. “I think Carolyn had her people pretty much with her.” Apparently, Carolyn’s mother, Ann Messina Freeman, and her sisters, Lisa and Lauren Bessette, are more likely to have been given the task.

“The way I look at it, [‘Love Story’] is just being made by a group of people that never met them, didn’t know them, and are just making it up as they go along,” Chermayeff said.

Chermayeff’s comments come after Daryl Hannah criticized the show for its “untrue” portrayal of real people and events. Hannah, who dated JFK Jr. before his relationship with Carolyn, claimed: “The character ‘Daryl Hannah’ portrayed in the series is not even a remotely accurate representation of my life, my conduct, or my relationship with John. The actions and behaviors attributed to me are untrue.”

Let this stand as a reminder that Love Story is, ultimately, fiction.
