Prince William‘s efforts to connect with younger generations are drawing fresh scrutiny and, according to some critics, falling flat at a difficult moment for Britain’s royal family.

The Prince of Wales recently appeared on BBC Radio 1 for an interview about men’s mental health in an apparent attempt to connect with a younger generation.

But the timing has sparked debate as the monarchy continues to face fallout tied to his uncle Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor‘s arrest amid ongoing questions about the former Duke of York’s relationship with predator Jeffrey Epstein.

According to reporting by The Independent, the mental health chat left the future king looking “more remote and out of touch than ever” amid the deepening scandal surrounding the former Prince Andrew.

Though William’s discussion aired shortly before Mountbatten-Windsor’s arrest on suspicion of misconduct in public office, it came well after multiple document dumps from the U.S. Justice Department linking his uncle to Epstein — yet William failed to address any of it.

Criticism emerged on social media, where some commenters argued that recent royal appearances have only reinforced the perception that Britain’s most famous family is disconnected from public frustration, Fox News Digital reported.

“Kate [Middleton] and William on vacation and [King] Charles [III] attending a fashion show while Prince Andrew was being interrogated is not a flex. They’re just showing the world how out of touch they are,” one user wrote on X.

Another commenter questioned William’s radio appearance, writing, “Prince William makes a surprise visit on Radio 1. Nobody listens to that program anymore, it’s dropped low in ratings but for only people in London. Another out-of-touch royalty.”

But not everyone agreed with that assessment.

“Prince William is getting more fire on the Epstein situation than ANY of those actually involved [and] associated institutions COMBINED. I’ve never seen more people so out of touch with reality in my life. When I point it out I’m somehow the one called an apologist. Wild,” another social media user wrote.

Another supporter added, “Prince William and Catherine are NOT out of touch so get your facts straight.”

Several royal commentators who spoke to Fox News Digital hit back at criticism of William.

Helena Chard, a British broadcaster and photographer, said she was “shocked” that The Independent “should release such a d****** report,” calling it “untrue” and an effort to “[incite] hatred towards the British royal family, especially as people are angry and the world seems more volatile at present.”

Royals expert Richard Fitzwilliams said the idea that William should publicly respond to the scandal involving his uncle was misguided.

“The criticism that he is doing nothing comes from the totally mistaken theory that it would be a good idea that he should be responding to events as they occur. This would be a fatally flawed tactic. He has put out one statement and this was followed by a further statement from the palace on the same day,” Fitzwilliams said.

Another royals expert, Ian Pelham Turner, told Fox News Digital that William has actually pushed for his uncle’s removal from royal life for years.

“In reality, William has been ferociously driving the total banishment of Andrew since 2019 after the [BBC] Newsnight … interview” in which Mountbatten-Windsor disastrously addressed his ties to Epstein, who’d died a few months earlier while awaiting trial on trafficking charges, Turner said.

Turner added that William’s position had “caused huge rows with his father,” who in late 2025 finally stripped his brother’s royal titles away and announced he was evicting him from his Crown Estate home amid growing Epstein questions.

Chard echoed that view, saying William has long recognized the damage his uncle has caused the monarchy.

“For years, Prince William behind the scenes has been pushing his father to sort the Andrew problem once and for all. … He is not slow in coming forward and very much reads the room of the general public and younger generation,” Chard insisted.

Prior to the former Duke of York’s arrest in February, a spokesperson for the Prince and Princess of Wales said the couple “have been deeply concerned by the continuing revelations” and that “their thoughts remain focused on the victims.”

But it could be too little too late as The Firm continues to lose support among younger Britons.

The Independent cited a recent YouGov poll that showed only 30 percent of Brits age 18 to 24 believe the monarchy is “good for Britain,” compared with 77 percent of people over age 65 — and that was before the Epstein scandal further engulfed the royals in recent weeks.

While William and Kate remain the most popular members of The Firm — about three-quarters of Britons hold favorable views of the Prince and Princess of Wales — support among younger generations is far weaker, the newspaper noted.

Signs of that tension were visible in recent days when members of the royal family arrived at Westminster Abbey in London for the annual Commonwealth Day service.

ABC News reported that as the king, Queen Camilla, William and Kate arrived, they were greeted by anti-monarchy protesters chanting “What do you know?” while members of the group Republic held bright yellow signs reading “Not my king,” “Down with the crown” and “Abolish the monarchy.”
