If you watch closly after this the left side of his jaw is completely blown apart. He took control of his own life in this moment and thus destroyed Tyler.
It wasn’t about shooting to kill Tyler, it was taking control over his life. A moment earlier foreshadowed when Tyler calls him a pussy for being scared of death during the car crash scene. Tyler throws them into the ditch embracing the chaos and the absurd. Norton finally does this himself, proving the necessity of Tyler Durden is no longer.
I know its only movie logic were watching here ,but anatomically he didn't give himself a lobotomy, his brain is located above where he shot not to mention he missed his neck /upper spinal chord however likely gave himself whiplash from the bullet, ( not a neurologist expert here ) i just do simple studys of the brain,(Phineas gage is the complete opposite of ed Nortons character to a degree!
He was ready to blow his brains out, but due to lack of handling, blew a hole out of his jaw. The other person was the "worst" of himself, which is why when he tried to kill them both, one died the way intended
My personal theory is that he thought he was gonna die and so when he shot himself what he thought would happen to him is what happened to Tyler instead
This scene is my favorite! It’s such raw symbolism, he blew much of his left jaw out but not his brain! He killed the devil whispering in his ear this whole time. From the plane until the end Tyler is all quips and little play lines, with some good points all around though a little twisted. He accepted Marla on his right and watched the world he knew fall apart. The symbolism is facing yourself and realizing while you may have had good points and intention you might one day face the consequences of that person you think you are but ultimately you will change in the moments of understanding and embrace that love is what you wanted in the end of it all and now you have to live with who you are while finding a way to accept and share it.
Because he believes he killed him cause its what he wanted. Tyler durden was not always with him it was a manifestation of his apathy for his own life, so he created the man he wanted to be. Marla was a problem for Tyler and tyler knew it.
I always just saw it as an act so brave and powerful that he proved to himself that he didn't need Tyler anymore. Tyler being literally his masculine ideal. Which is completely necessary to him at the beginning in his neutered pacified manlet state. But was compartmentalized to the point of being literally a different person. The moral of fight club was never all Tyler's anti capitalist rhetoric. Its a man dealing with his own buried masculinity, essentially the jungian integration of the shadow.
At the end of the film, just before credits roll, you can see a brief moment of Tyler's "work" possibly suggesting he might still be alive.
The narrator had to come to terms that the other person he was blaming for all the bad stuff happening (Tyler) was actually him.
Throughout the film it mentions self destruction and self improvement. I believe the narrator shooting himself was him accepting his past actions and "killing" a vision of himself in order to live the life and be the person he actually wanted to be. Fully being in the moment and not "sleepwalking" through life.
How do you possibly think he blew part of his brain out…Tyler only died there because The Narrator was actually attempting to kill himself and failed thus when he pulled the trigger he thought he died so Tyler died.

Explain how the bullet killed him too just explain it I’m lost
nah, Tyler loved tricking him, so he faked his death, hes still in there , waiting. plotting. for the right moment.

That angle would blow out your brain stem, so bye bye.
norton pulling the trigger is symbolic as him killing that part of himself i guess
I watched the DVD commentary and the smoke ring was pure accident. Pure cinema gold.

because its all in his head, to him that was the only way to kill him, he tried to kill himself, he thought he did, thats why Tyler died

This format still sucks
Still dumb, he would have cooked his brain, besides that how would shooting himself in the cheek kill Tyler
And then there's the sequel comic smh
My personal theory is that he thought he was gonna die and so when he shot himself what he thought would happen to him is what happened to Tyler instead
What the fuck does that top text say?
People being so confused by this ending show you we got a lot of real dumbasses out there.
In the book, didn't it ricochet off the back of his skull?
Everyone here is breaking the first rule!!
The book ending beats this, hands down.

Love this move I watched over 100 times in my twenties and could just recite long parts of the script. I still remember quite a bit of it.

Just a side note, your brain doesn't splatter it comes out whole
In the past 5 years I’ve seen mfs upload clips of this movie, this is the 1st time I’ve seen this one lmaooo. I guessing this is how it ends.😮😆
He's taking his life. So he's also taking his life from everyone else.

And at the end of the movie you see Brad Pitts dick
He shot through his cheek on purpose to make his alter ego think he’d killed himself that’s why Brad Pitt dies if anyone’s wondering
