Prince Harry allegedly “complained” that he had been “abandoned” before a major event with Meghan Markle after they had quit the Royal Family, a new royal book has claimed. In his forthcoming book, Betrayal: Power, Deceit and the Fight for the Future of the Royal Family, extracts of which have been serialised by The Times Magazine, Tom Bower delves into how Meghan “relentlessly pursued” her dream of being a “global figure” on the world stage and how she was “thwarted by her own ego”.

Mr Bower wrote: “‘She’s f***ed it,’ groaned Robertson. Instead of speaking as agreed about the charity One Young World, Meghan’s speech was focused on herself. Nearly fifty times in just ten minutes, she intended to say ‘I’.”

The author also alleged that days before the event, Harry said: “I’ve been abandoned.”

The Sussex couple saw their security downgraded following their bombshell exit from the Royal Family in 2020.

Mr Bower said: “Stressed about their security, Harry had been told that the Home Office refused to provide armed protection in Manchester and London.

“But with Meghan’s insistence that her appearance was essential to sustain her brand, he decided to ‘risk assassination’.

“At least Manchester police provided extra cover to avoid a major incident. And a whole rail carriage was reserved for the journey from London to Manchester.

“Although the public would be barred from access to the ‘royal carriage’, Harry later complained about the dangers he faced ‘because of his proximity to the public’.”

In response to The Times’ serialisation of Bower’s new book, a spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex said: “Mr Bower’s commentary has long crossed the line from criticism into fixation.

“This is someone who has publicly stated, ‘the monarchy in fact depends on actually obliterating the Sussexes from our state of life,’ language that speaks for itself.

“He has made a career out of constructing ever more elaborate theories about people he does not know and has never met.

“Those interested in facts will look elsewhere; those seeking deranged conspiracy and melodrama know exactly where to find him.”
