Oscars: Ryan Coogler, Best Original Screenplay for ‘Sinners’ Winner | Full Backstage Interview
Ryan Coogler wins Best Original Screenplay for ‘Sinners’ and talked backstage at the 98th Academy Awards, which aired on ABC and is streaming on Hulu. He said he knew right from the begining he wanted Michael B. Jordon for the movie. Coincidentally, Michael reached out to Ryan, before this script was ready, to work on another project. Ryan turned him down, but proposed ‘Sinners’ to him and luckily he jumped on board.

He went to Hollywood and wrote screenplays because of the suggestion of a teacher. A teacher never knows where their influence will take someone. Forever grateful for my teachers.
Best dressed on the night too.
So happy for him and I love hearing him talk. The combination of that Oakland accent and the passion for his art brings me joy. Looking forward to everything he does.

I love Ryan Coogler because he is just a downright humble, and talented individual. I do understand what he meant when he said that he was not smart enough to teach the movie, Sinners as a class and would rather leave it up to the college professors to do so (when a reporter asked him the question–that was his humility talking). However, in my opinion, Coogler would be the best professor to teach the work that he has created because he knows his material by heart, the history behind it, and he would teach it with passion. It's not always about having the smarts! I believe that he did himself a disservice when he made that comment about himself because in my mind, he was smart enough to create this story, hire a bunch of phenomenal black and white actors to portray those characters, direct the film, brought it to cinema, gained a ton of money at the box office, and won an Oscar for best screenplay as a new Black director! That's pretty smart to me, absolutely genius! Kudos to you Ryan Coogler!β€β€β€β€β€β€β€β€β€
Hearing how much Coogler loved his Uncle James is heartwarming, but funny when you remember that Killmonger was an expression of Coogler who also had an Uncle Jamesβ¦β¦β¦yet that relationship had a very different ending.

Congratulations Ryan Coogler.
Congratulations, πRyan Coogler.
Sinners should have won. One battle was adapted from a book and it took the dude 9 years to write it. Coogler wrote the first draft of Sinners in 4 months. The studio gave PTA $170 million dollars and he didn't even make his budget back. He lost $100 million dollars. Coogler got 90 million and was the only profitable film nominated.
Congratulations to brothers ππ½ π π― π from Africa ππ’π
π― humility at his core
Sinners is a master class in sociology. The way this work stimulated the world to have conversations.
Congrats

What… you mean Michael B. Jordan got mad because Coogler turned him down for a project? You mean Michael B. Jordan's not a saint like everyone acts like he is or thinks he is? I mean, he actually gets mad even with his colleagues and friends who say no to him…. what do you know about that…. crazy?
