Searchlight Pictures has released the trailer for “Wild Horse Nine,” the latest film from Oscar winner Martin McDonagh. The filmmaker reunites with Sam Rockwell after directing him to a best supporting actor Oscar in “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.”
The official logline, which was kept tightly under wraps until now, reads, “Shortly before the 1973 Chilean coup, CIA agents Chris and Lee are dispatched from Santiago to Easter Island by their bureau chief, MJ. Amongst the Island’s iconic statues, and as the longtime partners wrestle with their dark pasts and present conspiracies, Chris’s newfound bond with a pair of rebellious students threatens to send everyone’s trust to this remote island paradise sideways.”
John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell lead the cast as CIA agents Chris and Lee, respectively, while Steve Buscemi plays their bureau chief. Other cast members include Mariana di Girolamo, Ailín Salas, Tom Waits and Parker Posey.
“Wild Horse Nine” reunites McDonagh with Searchlight, Blueprint Pictures and Film 4 after his 2022 dark comedy “The Banshees of Inisherin.” That film earned nine nominations at the Academy Awards, including for best picture, best director and best screenplay.
“Wild Horse Nine” originally launched at AFM 2021, where Searchlight first picked up the project. At the time, Christopher Walken and Oscar Isaac were slated to star alongside Rockwell, but they have since departed the project. SVP of production Taylor Friedman and director of development and production Peter Spencer are overseeing the project for Searchlight. They report to Katie Goodson-Thomas and DanTram Nguyen, the heads of production and development.
McDonagh serves as writer, director and producer alongside Graham Broadbent, Pete Czernin and Anita Overland.
“Wild Horse Nine” hits theaters on Nov. 6. Check out the trailer below.
