EXCLUSIVE: After driving The Lost Bus to critical acclaim last fall, Oscar nominee Paul Greengrass has found his next project to maneuver as he is in negotiations to helm the 20th Century thriller Test Drive.
The studio landed the spec in fall 2024 from writer Matt Venne after a heated bidding war. After getting a draft that excited execs, the studio took a big swing with Greengrass following success of The Lost Bus. With Greengrass now on board, the hope is get the film up and running by end of year/top of 2027.
Plot details are unknown other than it being described as two-hander action thriller. Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell will produce through their Safe House banner along with Joanna Kaye. Greg Goodman is also producing. Scott Aversano will oversee for 20th.
Greengrass is no stranger to exciting audiences, going all the way back to his Oscar-nominated work on United 93. While he is known for those based on true-story thrill rides, his career really took off after directing 2004’s The Bourne Supremacy starring Matt Damon. He also helmed sequels The Bourne Ultimatum (2007) and Jason Bourne (2016), and other helming credits include News of the World, 22 July, Captain Phillips, Bloody Sunday and The Theory of Flight.

He most recently directed The Lost Bus for Apple Original Films. The pic bowed at last year’s Toronto Film Festival, earning strong reviews for Greengrass and its star Matthew McConaughey. Greengrass also directed the upcoming Focus Features pic The Uprising (fka The Rage), about a ferocious rebellion against the tyranny of King Richard II in plague-ravaged 14th century England. Andrew Garfield stars.
