Photos at the time show the trio in ski gear with both Charles and William, then 15, wearing warm woollen hats. However a 13-year-old Harry has opted for style over practicality and is wearing a white baseball cap with his suit, which became a bone of contention between the trio leading to a brutal remark. Lip reader Nicola Hickling analysed a clip of the family as they rode a ski lift to the slopes with Harry looking completely miserable.
“Harry, William and Charles are on the ski lift, and I believe that Harry say ‘I’m so cold’ and then, not listening to Harry, Charles turned to William and says: ‘He has no sense. Of course, it’s b***** cold, we’re in the snow’,” she explained.
“Charles then responds to William: ‘He wanted to wear that cap’,” she said. “Charles goes on saying that: ‘I told him he was mad and that it’s very cold’. So he finishes by saying he doesn’t make it easy for himself,” she shared.
Speaking on Channel 5’s Lip-Reading the Royals: What Are They Really Saying she then revealed William responded: “Let him crack on. He will learn. He will probably get frostbite.”
Actress Nina Wadia who was a commentator on the show enjoyed learning what had really been said observing: “The royal family they are just human beings and this is the perfect example of it.
“I love the fact that his brother and his father are ripping into him. Of course style is more important than practicality, he’s a teenage boy! Of course he’s going to wear a baseball cap on a ski lift and then complain that it’s cold.’
Meanwhile a former royal butler Grant Howard analysed the scene saying: “What’s nice with this clip is you see the King trying to take his kids – he’s trying to get them to do fun things and have some time with them and enjoy their company.
“Even though it’s obviously gone wrong with this conversation,” he added.
