McDermott said Jane Austen dramas are popular because they still resonate with audiences today.

“We can relate to the female experiences, there’s a resonance for us today,” she said.

Lauren Falconer, resident actor at The Jane Austen Centre in Bath where she plays Lizzie Bennet, said it is “exciting” to have a new Jane Austen drama.

“I’ve loved Jane Austen since I was a little girl, it’s amazing I get to chat to people every day about how much they love her,” she said.

“She was addressing really important issues, women’s rights, many women in the Regency era had to marry to support themselves. She has very strong female characters.”

Falconer said when she auditioned to work at the centre, they chose Lizzie Bennet’s character for her.

“I’m a headstrong girl,” she added.

The Other Bennet Sister is currently streaming on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
