Selena Gomez was a guest on the Hannah Montana: 20th Anniversary Special, where she and Miley Cyrus had a heart-to-heart as they reflected on their time on the Disney Channel show and the friendship they built because of it.

Gomez told Cyrus point blank, “You created culture, babe!”

Cyrus returned the compliment, recognizing Gomez’s own legacy as the star of Disney Channel’s Wizards of Waverly Place when she said, “you too!”

Gomez, who played the guest role of Mikayla on Hannah Montana, asked Cyrus how she felt being on the recreated set. “Excited that you’re here,” she replied. They then discussed how Gomez only went on set twice but never had scenes there because Mikayla was more of a “Hannah’s life” character.

Cyrus asked Gomez what she remembered about filming. “I remember being in that blue weird makeup,” she recalled.

“Where you were like an alien?” Cyrus finished.

“Yes,” she said. “I remember feeling ugly in that. ’Cause we’re like 15, and I want to feel pretty, and I’m like ugh!”

They then reflected on Hannah and Mikayla’s antagonistic relationship, with Cyrus telling Gomez, “When I watch it back, like we were vicious.”

“It’s pretty mean,” Gomez agreed. “I don’t think they would get away with saying half of that now. I was so mean! I’m sorry!”

“But we can make amends now!” Cyrus said, before taking her into Hannah’s closet and giving her Mikayla’s red hat (“Look at me, I’m back! You know? I’m not mad at it,” Gomez quipped while putting it on). Their reunion ended sweetly, with the two stars exchanging compliments.

“I love you, girl! You’re the best,” Gomez said.

“You are!” Cyrus replied.

“And you’re killing it!” Gomez added. “You look great.”

As they walked off set together, they reflected on how surreal the anniversary was. Cyrus told her, “It’s really sweet to know somebody for 20 years. That means I’ve known you for almost 20 years.”

“That’s weird!” Gomez admitted.

“That’s really weird,” Cyrus agreed.

Ahead of the special’s premiere, Cyrus told Variety that Alex Cooper, who interviewed her during the show, arranged for Gomez’s surprise appearance.

“I love Selena, but I didn’t know how much our friendship meant to the fans,” Cyrus said.

The two stars first really reconnected in 2020 when Gomez appeared on Cyrus’s pandemic-era Bright Minded Instagram Live show. She had DM’d Cyrus a butterfly emoji, which sparked the conversation and led to Gomez’s interview on the program.

“I think you’re one of the greatest singers ever,” Gomez told Cyrus then. “And I just was so happy that I even got this opportunity to talk to you about some of the most incredible people.”

The two stars most recently had a viral reunion at the Golden Globes:
