Waiting for “Alien: Romulus” back in 2024 was rough on my friends and family, not from anticipation, but because I wouldn’t shut up about it. Being a massive “Alien” fan, I was tracking every update until the sequel hit theaters. Experiencing it for the first time was surreal, and the second viewing left me completely floored. Every subsequent rewatch has only deepened my obsession. It’s a perfect example of how to revive a beloved franchise, and it gives me hope that the next installments will keep raising the bar.

From the titles that are leaving Netflix, “The Usual Suspects” immediately caught my attention. This ’90s thriller remains one of the most celebrated in its genre, and it’s easy to see why. Bryan Singer’s film still captivates audiences nearly 30 years later, influencing countless thrillers with its clever storytelling and unforgettable twist (which I won’t spoil). Packed with tension and a strong cast, “The Usual Suspects” has everything you want from a classic thriller.

“The Usual Suspects” sees the interrogation of small‑time con man Roger “Verbal” Kint (Kevin Spacey), one of only two people to survive a deadly explosion on a ship in San Pedro Bay. As U.S. Customs agent Dave Kujan (Chazz Palminteri) presses him for details, Verbal recounts how he and four other criminals — Dean Keaton (Gabriel Byrne), Michael McManus (Stephen Baldwin), Fred Fenster (Benicio del Toro), and Todd Hockney (Kevin Pollak) — were brought together in a New York police lineup and pulled into a series of escalating crimes. Gradually, the tale leads back to the fateful night on the dock.

Do I really need to introduce “Shrek”? This beloved animated adventure isn’t just one of the most well-known family movies, but it also generated countless memes thanks to its classic humor. On top of that, it won the very first Academy Award for Best Animated Feature (something many people might not know). With “Shrek 5” slated for release in 2027 and a standalone “Donkey” spinoff on the way, there’s no better time to revisit this magical movie filled with nostalgia.

“Shrek” centers on a solitary green ogre named Shrek whose quiet life in a swamp is disrupted when fairy‑tale creatures banished by the ruthless Lord Farquaad invade his home. To get his land back, Shrek makes a deal with Farquaad and sets off to rescue Princess Fiona from a dragon‑guarded castle, joined by a talkative Donkey. After freeing Fiona, the trio begins the journey back to Farquaad’s kingdom, but unexpected events complicate their mission.

There’s serious musical credibility behind the 2013 musical dramedy “Begin Again”: John Carney, who wrote and directed Oscar-winning “Once” and Golden Globe-nominated “Sing Street,” is at the helm. Much of the movie’s appeal comes from the sparkling chemistry between Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo, but the standout element is the music that flows throughout the story. The film also marks Knightley’s first time singing on screen, and her performance of “Lost Stars” earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song.

“Begin Again” follows Gretta James (Knightley), a singer‑songwriter in New York City reeling from a breakup with her longtime boyfriend and musical partner, Dave Kohl (Adam Levine). After a chance encounter at a bar, she meets Dan Mulligan (Mark Ruffalo), a struggling record‑label executive recently fired from his job. Dan sees potential in Gretta’s music and proposes they record an album together using locations throughout the city. As they work on the project, the two work through the challenges of producing and performing their songs.

Watch On

One of my all-time favorite horror movies has to be “The Cabin in the Woods,” and I find myself suggesting it to anyone hesitant about horror. It’s a horror film, yes, but it’s also a sharp, inventive satire of slasher tropes. Since the movie doesn’t play things completely straight, the killings and chaos aren’t as intense as in films like “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” but every element of the genre is there, just presented in a clever, self-aware way that makes it super entertaining.

“The Cabin in the Woods” follows five college friends — Dana (Kristen Connolly), Curt (Chris Hemsworth), Jules (Anna Hutchison), Holden (Jesse Williams), and Marty (Fran Kranz) — who go on a weekend getaway to a secluded cabin in the woods. Shortly after arriving, strange events unfold as they explore the cabin’s hidden cellar filled with unusual objects. As the group encounters new threats and bizarre creatures, they begin to uncover the truth behind their situation and the forces controlling what’s happening to them.
