The synopsis: "Fourteen years after the passing of Frodo – Sam, Merry, and Pippin set out to retrace the first steps of their adventure. Meanwhile, Sam’s daughter, Elanor, has discovered a long-buried secret and is determined to uncover why the War of the Ring was very nearly lost before it even began."

I don’t like the sound of this, but I’m trying to be open minded.
I’d hope that one of the things Colbert would pursue when his show ends was something Tolkien-related. I just thought that he would start a Tokien podcast, not write a new LOTR movie.
This is like Toy Story to me. 3 was enough. I’m not watching any of the extra crap, you can’t ruin it for me.
Keeping expectations….. appropriately low.
If I’m grasping this correctly… it’s LOTR fan fiction?
This is not a comment on this project specially, but I’m so tired of reboots/ prequels/ sequels of known IPs getting funding and original stuff left in the dust because the latter hasn’t ‘proven’ itself to be profitable.
In a different media environment, I would’ve been more excited for this.
Edit: actually, after remembering what happened to the Hobbit, I doubt I’d be excited about this under any other circumstance. At this point just leave the franchise alone.
We’re getting a Barrow-Downs spinoff movie before we’re getting literally anything from The Silmarillion. Damn.
Colbert being involved, superfan that he is, is remarkably exciting, but the premise just sounds even more barrel-scraping than Hunt For Gollum. I know WB only has the rights to a limited piece of the mythos, but still.
April fools came early?
I’ve watched the video and I read the article, but I still can’t believe this isn’t a joke.
This is so unfortunate. Keep your lord of the rings fanfic on ao3 where it belongs—rich people just do anything and everything smh
I think i’d rather have a movie or series like Love, Death, and Robots how its a bunch of different short stories but its the silmarillion
I wish he’d leave it alone.
All 3 LOTR films were amazing, but The Hobbit trilogy was awful.
I’d prefer to see another Tintin movie than some more LOTR.
The plot details really worries me: “Fourteen years after the passing of Frodo – Sam, Merry, and Pippin set out to retrace the first steps of their adventure. Meanwhile, Sam’s daughter, Elanor, has discovered a long-buried secret and is determined to uncover why the War of the Ring was very nearly lost before it even began.”
That sounds like a semi sequel to Return of the King. Which would just be a very bad idea.
Putting “has a dad” on my CV
Fuck that I don’t want Colbert anywhere near this shit. I don’t care how many times he read The Silmarillion

Can anyone explain why they keep reheating the Lord of the rings nachos ad nauseum but they never do anything about Silmalirion?
Or hell make Tolkien proud and make an an actually good movie out of his favorite thing in the world aka Beowulf?

Why is Stephen Colbert’s son called Peter McGee and not Peter Colbert?
I have many conflicting thoughts. On the one hand, Colbert knows his Tolkien. On the other, those chapters amount to barely anything.
Like, how are you gonna make what’s probably gonna be a 2-3hr movie out of what is essentially just Tom Bombadill and the Barrow Wights?
The cynic in me is thinking, just like with Hunt for Gollum, this is all just about WB clinging onto the book rights so Amazon can’t make their own LotR.
Remember a few years ago when the head of WB was annoyed that IP like Potter and LOTR was being unused? And now we have the potter reboot and 2 new LOTR films?
This has nothing to do with creativity, new ideas, wanting to explore middle earth or an artistic endeavour. This is studio mandated “make more or we lose IP”
In the movie industry it is always always always about money
Those Hobbit movies were fucking terrible. Zero confidence in any of this.
oh so this must be why Elijah Wood made those comments about refusing to pass the torch on Frodo a month or so back? I want to be excited but I just know better, I’m afraid
Finally Stephen Colbert’s son is getting a big shot in Hollywood!
I mean, let him make his fanfic into a movie, I don’t mind, I am just thinking about the fact that Paramount is really doing everything to get rid of him (even cancelling “Starfleet Academy” to get rid of his voice), but if they do end up getting Warner he will work for them again and make this movie for them (or rather not because they hate him so much) … So, one more reason to not let this merger happen, please.
I wish I was famous enough to insert my ideas in the lore of a story I’ve been a fan of but have never had a hand in developing previously
