Ryan Gosling to movie goers at a NYC showing of ‘Project Hail Mary’: “Thank you just for coming to the theater. I think obviously theaters need you, but it’s not your job to keep them open, it’s our job to make things that make it worth you coming out. So, that’s what we did with this film.”

My longest celebrity crush. First saw him in Fracture, and that made me a fan. Also, love how sensible he is. Good on him.

  2. Meanwhile other studios: here’s a 3-hour CGI mess, take it or leave it.

Kuddos to him, refreshing to see some honesty 😭👏🏽

  3. So true, it’s been a long time since I felt compelled to watch movies at the theatre, mostly superhero slop, shitty comedies or horror films that follow the same spent formula ( Scream 7??). It’s a real shame because I love the sound, that I can’t reproduce anywhere else, and the screen size, but 80% of the last visits I can’t help to have a bitter taste in my mouth like this was not really worth it and ” I could’ve watch this in my living room”.

  4. Ryan Gosling, I didn’t really care about you before Barbie, but you have now bewitched me body and soul.

Yes to this—studios need to prioritize more thoughtful, well-made original films, rather than churning out reboots and sequels on sequels where the budget is used up on star power and CGI and the writing is dumbed-down so that the audience can be on their phones at the same time.

I would flip out if he popped into my movie theater. There’s one particular theater close to Columbus Circle where the stars would just “randomly” (ie unbeknownst to attendees) introduce the movie.

  7. He’s right! I rarely go to movies anymore because of the cost but I’m excited to see this one in imax. If you make something worth seeing in the theater, people will show up

The reviews of this movie were so funny. I’ve heard both “movie-by committee, corporate, formulaic” and “a good time with well-timed story beats.” I’m choosing to think it’s somewhere in the middle, and im pretty okay with a movie that sets out to be fun and a good time, which is what this film sounds like.

I agree with this statement. Only a few films have peaked my interest in recent years. Been a fan of Ryan Gosling since Drive.

I’m a Ryan too lol but I’ve always supported Ryan’s films. He picks great films to be in and I can’t wait to see this new one.

  13. This is much better than “we made this dogshit and you are bad for not enjoying it”.

Just make enjoyable movies instead of cash grabs.

    Thank you.

He has the right attitude. I’ve seen so many people on film subs and in Hollywood acting like it’s our personal responsibility to keep theaters afloat and attack people personally who say they’d rather wait for streaming sometimes.

If you make something worth going to, people will go to it. But we’re also not obligated to give our money to what’s often a lackluster experience for the sake of “keeping cinema alive” or whatever.

Make movies affordable again and don’t let them price gouge everything. Can we please all stop taking blame for corporate greed??

This is what I have been saying for a long time. I am so tired of studios and theaters using streaming as a scapegoat for why theaters are dying. It is theaters charging high prices for tickets and concessions for subpar movies the studios are putting out. If you make good product, people will show up in spite of the price gouging (and even more will show up if theaters stop that nonsense) and this movie proves that.

The studios can only do so much, too. There is one theatre chain that owns every cinema within over an hour’s drive of me. 20 years ago, there were choices. A movie would stay in theatres for longer than a week or two. It was more affordable. People had more fun money to spend. And missing a theatrical release used to mean waiting upwards of a year before it was available for rent or purchase, incentivizing people to catch it in the theatre.

The entire market has changed drastically, and very few of the changes were done at the behest of the consumers. Greed has taken what used to be an accessible artform and made it into a luxury. I wish I could go see a movie every week like I used to, but it costs much, much more than what it did back then.

I agree on his take but PHM wasn’t really that good let’s be honest. Pacing was great, plot itself was good. But there were immersion breaking moments just back to back that hurt to watch. Like they explained how the ai slowly was able to translate more and more of the eridian language, then they just decide that for the rest of the movie rockie has no actual speech, like you can’t hear the sounds he was making when he was being translated. Then he starts rolling around in the ball, no matter where the computer is to translate his alien language, the sound itself is coming from the ball instead of you know the corner of the room. Wild decisions from production honestly.
