This gut-wrenching monologue from Laura Dern in ‘Marriage Story’ is more than enough to show why she won the Oscar.

  1. This is so ham-fisted and overacted. But I don’t think it’s great writing to work with. Too predictable, been said already, even in the Barbie movie.

Renata: WIll SOMEBODY GIVE A WOMAN A MOMENT!! Will be always my number one Laura Dern moment.
    Great actress!

  3. I had to pause that movie in the court room scene and take a breather. Not many things mess with me as a kid of divorce, but had my first child before seeing that movie. It made me think, “am I going to end up like this? Like my own parents too? ” Just such a good film.

I agree with what she’s saying, but I have to acknowledge how hot she is here. 😍

Yes, both genders experience sexism when it comes to raising families. Welcome to the real world, we alle eating a shit sandwich. Or are we going to pretend a mother who cant provide is judged the same way a dad is when he cant?

Good acting, not sure about the gut-wrenching monologue.

  6. I watched this movie to get context for the Adam Driver emotional meme.

Did not know what I was signing up for. Ooph.

  7. She’s utterly gorgeous, but that Hollywood hair flopping around is really distracting.

More power to you if you’re this beautiful, but most women I know who are out working in the world go with a little more chill personal styling

I’ve never seen this before. Obviously the premise is true but it’s written very much as if a male writer thought of this for the first time and is presenting it as an original idea. What woman doesn’t know this? Women would not necessarily speak on that topic like this because they have probably felt this their whole lives.

Also, a pet peeve of mine is when a monologue is written to be A Monologue and it’s not at all how people talk but still delivered in conversation onscreen. I think if you want to write something like that you have to deliver it through narration like in Gone Girl

  9. This feels very theatre “talking to the audience”, but maybe it feels more impactful while watching the movie through? I know that the plot is about a couple who work in the theatre, so is it intentional?

Not trying to be snarky, I’m autistic so can’t figure out if it’s a thematic choice or if I just don’t resonate with the performance/monologue.

  10. Baumbach’s monologue is nice, but I don’t know if it works in this particular scene with this character. It looks kinda forced imo, even tho I agree with it and I pretty much like this movie. Dern’s delivery is perfect for the character but it doesn’t show her actual full range as an actress

  11. It’s a good monologue about a sad reality in our world, but not really a “gut-wrenching” one.

  12. I get her monologue but its wild to say the basis of Judeo-Christian is Mary… just say Christian!! I dont think Judaism really cares that much about Mary…
