EXCLUSIVE: As his sci-fi adventure Project Hail Mary continues to break box office records, Ryan Gosling looks to be orbiting his next big project. Sources tell Deadline that Gosling is set to star in Universal Pictures’ untitled event film directed by The Daniels, aka Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, the Oscar-winning duo behind Everything Everywhere All at Once.
Details on the project remain under wraps other than it is set to start production later this summer in Los Angeles. Kwan, Scheinert and Jonathan Wang will produce through their Playgrounds overall deal with Universal. Playgrounds’ Kwan and Wang recently produced The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptimist from Universal’s specialty studio Focus Features, set for release in theaters on March 27, 2026.
Exec VP of Production Development Sara Scott and Director of Production Development Jacqueline Garell will oversee the project for the Studio.

It’s been four years since Daniels swept the 2022 Oscars with their A24 pic Everything Everywhere All At Once, with a lot of time spent developing this secret project that was set up at Universal in 2024. After recently dating the film for Nov. 19. 2027, word began to spread around town that while a lot of the ensemble would be younger talent that would audition, the studio and Daniels were aiming high when it came to the first actor to receive an offer and boy did they deliver.
While this had been discussed in recent weeks, the timing of Gosling officially closing his deal couldn’t be better after the Oscar-nominated actor delivered the biggest opening in his career this past weekend with Amazon MGM Studios’ Project Hail Mary. The film broke several records including the best non-sequel opening for a March movie with $141 million globally including 80 million domestically and as of today crossed the $100 million marker in the states.
Not only are the box-office numbers superb but the reviews have been stellar with the film officially becoming Gosling’s highest-rated film in his career on Rotten Tomatoes. Add in their critical acclaim for his own performance in the film, one can expect these reviews to carry all the way to next year’s awards season as a major player in various categories.
