Meghan Markle and Prince Harry will “crash and burn” unless King Charles acts now, a royal expert has said.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex should be given the “half-in, half-out” royal roles Harry previously suggested, according to Tina Brown, the former editor-in-chief of Vanity Fair. She believes Harry and Meghan need the posts urgently because existing revenue streams, such as their Netflix deal, are “starting to dry up”.

Ms Brown wrote: “The Sussexes’ revenue streams are starting to dry up. Before the Sussexes crash and burn, the House of Windsor needs to put aside schadenfreude and grip the problem. Give Harry and Meghan a limited international role.”

She makes the argument in her recent Substack essay, published in the wake of speculation Netflix wants to replace the Sussexes with Prince William and Princess Catherine to take their royal coverage in a new direction.

It had been reported Meghan, 44, was primed to return to acting following the end of the Netflix contract. The star had a successful acting career with credits in legal drama Suits and sci-fi show Fringe among other programmes and films.

But now clamour has grown for Meghan to instead join Harry with royal engagements again. They quit royal duties for their life in California in 2020 but, with The Firm facing scrutiny recently over Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Sarah Ferguson’s links to convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, pressure remains for the monarch to make wholesale changes.

One of these could be to use his son and Meghan in what has been described as “half-in, half-out” roles. It is understood Harry and Charles spoke about these designs as far back as September last year. This sit down was significant as it was the first time Harry and Charles met since early 2024.

Speaking to the Mirror at the time, the former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond said: “Could it not have worked, half in half out? He is the spare, he isn’t going to be King, so why couldn’t they have worked out some sort of compromise?

“He’s a natural with the crowds: funny, informal, charming. This week (when Harry had returned to London for the visit) has shown what a great loss he is. But as far as the Palace is concerned, it seems the basic conundrum remains: how can a working member of the royal family, even a part-timer, also operate in the commercial world?”

Harry and Meghan, who tied the knot in May 2018, are set to visit Australia next month, where they will carry out philanthropic engagements, similiar duties members of the royal family complete.
