Prince Harry and Meghan Markle fans have hit back after the couple were savaged in a brutal putdown.

Liz Truss, who lasted just 45 days in office, took aim at the Duke and Duchess of Sussex amid speculation the couple may return to royal duties. However, Harry and Meghan admirers have jumped to their defence, arguing Ms Truss is “one to talk” after her disasterous time as prime minister.

When asked by a reporter whether she would back Harry and Meghan carrying out royal engagements, including in the UK, Ms Truss, 50, said: “That’s really a matter for the king and the other members of the royal family, but as far as I’m concerned, you’re very welcome to keep them in California.”

Her remarks to News Nation Now have sparked outrage. Writing on social media, one person said: “Truss is really one to talk about work after her time.” Another posted: “She’s the biggest flop and underachiever of a prime minister in this nation’s history.” A third said: “Who in their right mind would ever take any notice of anything Liz Truss ever says?”

We reported just last week how pressure has grown on King Charles to offer Harry and Meghan a “half in, half out” role within the royal family, so they can carry out duties even in the US. One expert even expressed concern the Duke and Duchess of Sussex would “crash and burn” financially if such an arrangement isn’t pursued.

Meghan’s brand, As Ever, recently separated from the streaming giant, Netflix. However, it is thought she has looked at other opportunities and a trip to Australia next month is believed to help in this regard. The mother of two will appear at an event dubbed the “Her Best Life Retreat”. The three-day £1,400-per-ticket luxury retreat will take place between April 17 and 19, with around 300 guests set to attend.

But she and Harry have been warned to have “thick skins” during their time in the nation. Their last tour of the country was just after their wedding almost eight years ago, and huge crowds turned out to greet the couple. However, it is thought opinion of them Down Under has changed somewhat and now they will “no longer [be] assured of a warm welcome.”

An insider recently said: “I think there will be plenty of monarchists and republicans who won’t welcome Harry and Meghan’s visit. Any ‘royal’ visit, even by members of the family who no longer represent the King, will inevitably create debate about the monarchy.”
