In interview with Vanity Fair, Milly Alcock was asked about directors like Scorsese saying superhero movies suck. She says, “Whenever a new wave comes along, there’s going to be criticism towards it… Not every film is for everyone. The beauty of art is that you can be selective about your taste.”

This seems disingenuous when she turned her nose up at these kind of roles a few years back now lmaooooo

She’s a good actress though, I think if she cares, she’ll do a great job

She’s kind of a hypocrite since she literally said the same thing as Scorcese before she got the role

Scorcese didn’t say the movies suck. He just said they’re theme park rides vs working as an art form to bring something unexpected to audiences. He was mostly just against the idea of only blockbuster franchise movies taking over.

Enough $$$$$$ converts all actors into considering superhero movies cinema lol.

  5. Exactly. It is really about appealing to the audience. If enough people like it, who are they to criticize?

Super hero movies only exist to convince the masses to go along with terrible foreign policy

it is not art, it is propaganda

Superhero movies aren’t new. The earliest one on record was a 1916 silent film.

  8. But most superhero movies aren’t art, they’re consumer products. which is the exact critique Scorsese made when calling them theme park rides.

  9. What would you ask her that? There’s no winning this question. But also, a new wave?

That criticism by Scorcese truly lives rent-free in peoples’ minds, and you can tell it’s because superhero fans are deeply insecure about their genre. They’ve won the culture, the MCU ruled the box office for a decade, but they still crave the artistic clout they know they cannot and will never get. These movies are a product. They exist to sell toys and lunchboxes and Disneyland passes and the next installment of the series. They are a perpetual capitalism machine that only ever make statements by accident. And the fans can’t admit it.

I disagree wholeheartedly, the beauty of art is independent from the ability of the viewer to be selective about taste. If I was imprisoned for the rest of my days, I’d eventually find a profound beauty in the walls of my cell and it would be a beauty that no amount of art created in the outside world would hold a candle to. This wouldn’t be up to me, it’s human nature. But to the public, my taste would be irrelevant to the perceived beauty of what they would find inherent in their art. Beauty in art is itself subjective, so must be the beauty of art.

How long ago did Scorcese make that comment and it’s still coming up? Wild

  13. the media really needs to get off Scorsese’s back already. At least his daughter has made some funny videos about it. He is in his 80s! He’s been making films for a millions years! God forbid he doesn’t like Batman 12 (and I like Batman 12)

  14. Calling superhero movies a “new wave” instantly made me picture a Marvel story shot in handheld black and white like a Nouvelle Vague film from the early 60’s and now I’m sad that that doesn’t exist and most likely never will.

  15. They really don’t like being called out for taking on projects for the paycheck do they? I’m sure some of them do genuinely like comics. Maybe. But let’s be so for real. These movies are not made for the artistic benefit of film. They’re made intended to be big money making blockbusters. They’re made because studios know families will take their kids for something to do. They’ve long been sucked dry of anything novel. This is not a new wave. It’s a dead horse beaten to a pulp.
