I’m sure in general there will be a very mature and measured response to all reviews of this film. Right?

So same as the first one?
Looking forward to the mindless eye candy.

The sequel to the awful first film is also awful. I’m really shocked and surprised.

Definitely trying to profit off all the kids who’ll want to see this. It’s not meant to be an Oscar-caliber film

Honestly the part that stood out to me is the review calling the first movie “one of the best animated films in years”

I mean the first was basically G rated Family Guy. Thin story and just a bunch of references. Why would the sequel be any different?

I dunno what reviewers and adults in general are looking for out of a movie, but I’ve come to “rate” movies based on how well they entertain/engross/whatever their target audiences. Mario is, at its heart, a family/kid’s movie. My kid adored the first one, therefore, it succeeded and I rate it pretty highly for that. I’m expecting more of the same out of the sequel.

I mean, that’s what the first one was

So the same thing as the Minecraft and five nights of Freddy’s movies. Most of the target audience will be happy to get the kids out, and they probably love it like the first one.

I have been waiting for the Mario cinema experience I have been owed for like 35 years. All little kid me wanted was an overly colorful visual vomit of video game Easter Eggs while the 1 UP noise and level 1-1 theme plays. I don’t wanna hear this played out bullshit about the “charm” of the 90s movie and “technically you had a-” no. That was not a Mario Bros movie. I know it and everybody knows it. I will watch and enjoy that shit but this new animated movie has fulfilled my childhood dream and I’ll watch it and all 700 sequels. As long as it feels even remotely like I’ve fired up my SNES and am watching a movie of that, I don’t care how “good” (whatever definition of that word youtube crybabies are going with that day) it is. Mario will save the day and triumphant music will play. You Are a Super Player, thank you for playing. Let’s A Go, Motherfuckers.

The games themselves are pretty threadbare on plot and motivation.

I’m fine with people enjoying a mindless Mario movie.
But a Mario movie doesn’t *have* to be mindless. Oh well.

We have Chris Pratt as Mario, was that not an indicator? Look the only real question is will I have fun? And if it’s anything like the first one, the answer is yes. The real question is when do we get the Sonic crossover?

In other words, my 6 year old will love it and it’ll sell toys, like it’s meant to.

Excellent, as a huge Nintendo fan this seems made for me and children. Can’t wait.

An animated movie about a video game is a mindless 90 minutes offering fan service? Crazy.

It being a great movie would be a bonus, but it’s Illumination. I don’t expect it to be anything beyond “fun,” even if it’s objectively bad lmao.
As long as I can watch it without being bored and there’s a good bit of references to the games for me to point out, then I’m happy.

They’re starting to become like the FNAF movies in terms of critical reception
