Virginia Woolf’s Night & Day, an upcoming period drama starring Wicked Little Letters’ Timothy Spall and singer and actor Lily Allen, has been given a release date.

After premiering at the European Film Market earlier this year, Night & Day will release in UK cinemas on Friday, 19 June.

Based on the esteemed English author’s second novel of the same name, the film boasts an ensemble cast that includes comedian and The ‘Burbs actor Jack Whitehall, Cyrano’s Haley Bennett, the Bridget Jones series’ Sally Phillips, Suck Me Shakespeer’s Elyas M’Barek, and sketch show legend/Shrek 2’s Fairy Godmother Jennifer Saunders.

As is typical in period dramas, the plot follows the romantic exploits of friends Katharine Hilbery and Mary Datchet.

However, the novel is famously concerned with addressing the societal norms of the time, and questioning whether women can balance love, marriage and family with starting and maintaining a working career.

The official synopsis reads: “Night & Day is an un-romantic comedy about a passionate astronomer Katharine Hilbery who does everything she can to avoid romantic love and marriage.

“Fun and contemporary in tone, this refreshing film showcases an ensemble of humourous performances against the ravishing backdrop of London in 1910, advances in science and technology and crumbling Edwardian patriarchy. “

It’s been a busy year for Allen, as she released West End Girl last October to strong critical acclaim, and is currently taking the album on tour.

In terms of acting, the last few years have seen her star in Sky comedy-drama Dreamland, and on stage in 2:22 A Ghost Story, The Pillowman, and Hedda.

Meanwhile, Spall appeared last year in Kate Winslet’s directorial debut Goodbye June as well as the cosy detective drama Death Valley for BBC One. A second season has already been filmed in South Wales, and is due to air this year.
