Waking up anyone with Tubthumping is diabolical.
Remember that rumor from the early 2000s that they were playing Britney Spears as a torture device at Guantanamo Bay? Yeah, a lot of these songs remind me of that.
Coldplay would put you back to sleep.
This is delightfully corny
Sleepyhead is such a banger, but Iāve never heard that cover! Hopefully itās a little less jarring on intro lol
Run The World is diabolical! š¤£
no “Space Oddity” š ?
“Here am I sitting in a tin can , far above the world .. “
I do love they do that hahahaha!
I would be homicidal if I woke up to Chumbawamba.
Why no David Bowie?
Imagine waking up to Tubthumping.
“Mr. Blue Sky” would be an absolute banger of a wake-up tune. Beautiful choice.
Damn, they’re risking their lives going to the moon and you’re gonna subject them to Coldplay? Twice?
Douglas Hurley must be a Coldplay fan. I immediately dislike him
Mr. Blue Sky should be all of our wake up calls.
anyone knows where I can find the wikipedia article on this?
I would very much like to be friends with Ms. Sandra Magnus.
Most of these people donāt deserve the chance to dj space.
Sandra Magnus sounds so fun.
I just realized I could never be an astronaut (only for this reason obv, otherwise Iām a perfect candidate š ) because my sleep schedule is shit. They wouldnāt be able to wake me up because Iād just doze off again because I stayed up late or whatever.
Sandra Magnus has impeccable taste.
This post is how I found out Sleepy Head is a cover and not an original by Passion Pit. That being said, I went and listened to the original and it’s exactly what I would imagine a remix of the Passion Pit version would sound like and be labeled “Pool Remix”
If someone woke me up with that Chumbawumba song I would F I G H T them
Did not expect sleepyhead lol I mean, it makes sense, but that was one of my middle school jams, I didnāt expect astronauts to listen to it in space lol
When the Columbia disintegrated in 2003, one of the only things they were able to find in the wreckage were the Deep Purple cds brought aboard by astronaut Kalpana Chalwa. She used their song āSpace Truckingā as one of the wakeup songs on the trip, and was generally a big fan of the band. In response Deep Purple closed out their next album with the song āLost Contactā, which was a tribute to Chalwa and the rest of the crew.
So even in space you canāt escape chumbawamba.
Why did this make me emotional
Waking me up to God Bless America in this day and age would ruin my entire day
Green Light is such an underrated song. I never hear it out anymore but itās a banger
John Legend reaches the literal pinnacle of his career on the same day his fires his manager <<shakes head>>
Day 14 I would yeet myself in space
This is a awful list lol š
Fanfare for the Common Man is an S-tier choice; I would feel purposeful AF waking up to that in space
Iām thinking about how certain songs I heard at certain times in my life have an emotional impact on me, years later, sort of bringing me back to that moment. I wonder how theyāll feel when they hear these songs years from now, I bet itāll feel quite special
“Fly Me to the Moon” is right there though
Lmao I need to be best friends with Sandra, apparently. Waking up to tubthumping is hysterical
Greenlight would have me waking up PUMPED
Thatās what I would want. Being stuck in a small box floating thousands of miles away and being forced to listen to fucking Coldplay.
But⦠Tubthumping? Whyyyyy hahaha
Does the “Greeting” column mean the listed person will have a personalized message for the crew?
Chumbawumba? š¬

I read somewhere that Viva La Vida is scientifically proven to be a good wake up song. I set my alarm as it for a minute, but then decided to randomize it instead.
Okay but why cover sleepyhead, come on
When Opportunity started to fail, they created a Spotify playlist called āOpportunity Wake Up!ā Itās super cute.

For anyone interested, this is a history of the wake-up calls and an entire list of all the songs they’ve ever used, along with notes on why they were chosen.
https://www.nasa.gov/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/wakeup-calls.pdf
Some highlights:
– David Bowie songs appear on 4 different occasions (“Space Oddity” x2, and “Changes” x2). Queen shows up 5 times (though somehow never “Don’t Stop Me Now”).
– Various Star Trek songs show up like 8 different times, the Star Wars soundtrack also has 8 plays.
– They played wake-up music every sol (Martian day) for the teams working on the Mars rovers during the first few weeks of the missions.
– One time, they got Robin Williams to record a special wake-up call for Discovery in the style of “Good Morning Vietnam”. They also got Patrick Stewart to do a version of the Final Frontier monologue for an Atlantis mission (there was an Enterprise shuttle, but it was not space-worthy and never flew).
Am I understanding correctly – theyāre also getting a greeting from Elton John and Michael Stipe.
Somebody missed the mark by not requesting Your New Morning Alarm by Marc Rebillet.
