A24 has released a new trailer for Backrooms, an upcoming horror film based on the concept of existing outside of normal reality and discovering an endless realm of bland, slightly moist-smelling rooms.

The previous teaser didn’t show us much, but this proper trailer features Chiwetel Eijofor and the other cast members, depicting the moment where main character Clark discovers this strange dimension and becomes obsessed with learning its intricacies.

We get some found footage moments as well, calling back to the original collection of viral short films from Kane Parsons, the same director who is helming this big-screen film version.

Between the throwback vibes and the under-your-skin feeling that the concept of backrooms (and liminal spaces in general) can instil in you, this new trailer has fans absolutely hyped to visit the eternal maze of featureless rooms.

“If this trailer is anything to go by, this movie is going to be perfect”, wrote one fan in the YouTube comments, while another said: “I haven’t gone to see the release of a movie in like 10 years. I will be going for this.”

“Having the entrance to the backrooms be in a similar location to where the original photo was taken is a neat reference”, said a third fan, while others praised the “W music choice” lifted right from the shorts themselves.

“Seeing high-profile actors and the standard cinematography you would see in high budget movies next to Kane’s found footage style filmmaking shots is like a match made in heaven”, raved a fifth commenter.

“That fluorescent light buzzing is going to be absolute torture to listen to in an IMAX theater… I can’t wait,” joked another fan, while another praised the trailer for “not actually spoiling the entire film and keeping whatever scares they have secret”.

There’s also plenty of people who are simply astounded at the fact that the online shorts and this cinema release have all spawned from something that found traction on 4chan, of all places.

Parsons, at just 20 years of age, is one of the youngest filmmakers to helm a major Hollywood release, and is directing from a screenplay by Will Soodik. In addition to Ejiofor, the cast includes Renate Reinsve and Mark Duplass.

Backrooms is scheduled to be released in cinemas on 29 May.
