The Duchess of Edinburgh sparked a royal frenzy after she was was notably absent from Easter Sunday earlier this morning. The service held at St. George’s Chapel is of the most traditional dates in the royal calendar.

Her no-show quickly sparked questions online, with many asking why such a familiar face was missing from the annual gathering. Leading the service were King Charles III and Queen Camilla, joined by senior members of the Royal Family, including Prince William and Princess Catherine.

But Sophie’s absence was acutely felt, as her husband, Prince Edward arrived with their son James, Earl of Wessex.

Taking to X one outraged user penned: “I cannot believe Sophie is not there today.” While another agreed and shared, “No Duchess of Edinburgh Sophie?” Meanwhile a third chimed in and added, “No Sophie, Louise or Zara. Where are they?”

While Sophie is a working royal with official duties, Zara Tindall is not – she typically attends family events with her husband Mike Tindall and their three young children, but as this is a private gathering rather than an official engagement, she has no formal obligations to the Crown.

Buckingham Palace has yet to comment on why Sophie was not at the service today.

Her absence also comes just weeks after she was notably missing from the state banquet last month – a surprise at the time, as King Charles III hosted the President of Nigeria.

This now marks her second high-profile absence in a matter of weeks, inevitably raising further questions among royal watchers.

Despite this, the Duchess has remained active behind the scenes. She was spotted in London at the end of March attending The Jane Goodall Institute UK ‘Reasons For Hope’ Gala, where she appeared in good spirits.

Sophie’s, 61, recent diary has been far from quiet. In fact, she has been carrying out a string of back-to-back engagements, including overseas visits to Kenya and New York so far this year.

These appearances underline her continued commitment to royal duties, even if she has stepped back from a handful of high-profile moments.

Sophie remains firmly at the heart of the monarchy’s working values – often seen as one of its most reliable and steady figures.

Her role has only grown in importance as the number of senior working royals has reduced, making her contribution all the more significant.

Which is why her absence from visible events like Easter and the recent state banquet has not gone unnoticed.

Despite this, there is no indication she is stepping away from her responsibilities long-term. Following the Easter service, the Royal Family traditionally returns to Windsor Castle for a more private lunch steeped in tradition.

The meal typically centres around roast lamb, in keeping with the Easter custom.

This is usually followed by afternoon tea, often featuring chocolate treats from royal warrant holders such as Charbonnel et Walker.
