NASA’s statement on Twitter:

>> Make new friends, but keep the old. A new photo captures the Moon's near side on the right (the side we see from Earth, identifiable by its dark splotches) and its far side on the left. The Artemis II crew are the first to see the far side with human eyes.

First humans ever to see the dark side with their eyes? What about the Apollo 13 crew?

  2. The crew asking for one of the craters to be named after Reid’s late wife had me crying my eyes out 😭

There’s no dark side of the moon, really. Matter of fact, it’s all dark.

I really hope another moon landing happens. I’ll be so excited. It’s been a while.

That is one of those photos that makes space feel both beautiful and unreal at the same time.

I loved when they named the craters! One being named for Reid’s late wife.

There isn’t a Light and Dark side of the moon in the way the title is saying.

The moon is tidally locked to the earth. So the Near side is the side we always see and why we see the same surface features always. The Far side is the side always facing away from the earth.

Both sides can be light or dark dependent on where we and the moon are in reference to the sun which is why you have phases of the moon with different amounts of visible light and dark spots of the moon and why when in an eclipse, the near side is dark and the far side is lit.
