Kate, the Princess of Wales, has been distanced from Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s youngest daughter Princess Eugenie – despite having a wealth of reasons to cross paths with her fellow royal.

The pair have rarely been seen together beyond the context of their royal duties, despite having on paper a number of good reasons to socialise. They both went to the same school – the elite Marlborough College – and a clear interest in art. Eugenie is a director at the contemporary art gallery Hauser & Wirth in London, while Kate obtained a master’s in Art History at the University of St Andrews, where she met Prince William.

But an expert has revealed that the similarities largely stop there, with the two also typically drawn to different ends of the Royal Family.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams said Kate doesn’t “have the much in common” with either of the York sisters, who are close with one another. He added that Eugenie also seems to associate more with her cousin, adding: “Eugenie, particularly, seems to be closer to Harry.”

The divide may stretch back to their days at Marlborough in Wiltshire, where Kate kept her head down in her studies while Eugenie was once involved in an embarrassing incident.

She was once caught “frolicking naked in the ground” at the plush, £61,000-per-year boarding school following a night of end-of-term drinking in 2008, when she was 18. It was reported at the time that a senior member of staff was awoken by shrieks on the college lawns, who went outside to find the royal and a dozen other students dancing naked in the moonlight.

A staff member told the Sun: “The girls had been drinking, possibly in a local pub, and decided to let their hair down. For some reason they stripped off and started prancing about. It was light-hearted and they were sort of frolicking like nymphs.”

“But they got too noisy and staff discovered them. They had to quickly pick up their clothes and hot-foot it inside. She and the others were told they had to go home and only return to take their exams. There were not enough staff on Saturdays and Sundays to supervise them, and they were told they couldn’t be trusted to behave.”

A source told PA at the time: “It was nothing more than high jinks at the end of term in May. A group of them were reprimanded and that’s the end of the matter.”

The incident highlighted the clear differences between Kate and Eugenie, with the former of the two joining royal ranks just three years later following a less dramatic time at the college. Both have gone on to hold high-powered professional careers, and have dedicated their lives to charitable causes – but they remain in very different camps of the Royal Family.
