“Not to Be Shown to the Defence” (Full Scene) | In the Name of the Father

The walls of a corrupt system finally crumble when lawyer Gareth Peirce (Emma Thompson) discovers the smoking gun: a police file explicitly marked “Not to be shown to the Defence.” As the new evidence is presented, the case against Gerry Conlon (Daniel Day-Lewis) is dismissed, ending 15 years of wrongful imprisonment. It is one of the most powerful and triumphant moments in cinematic history.

    1. The truth was, they were terrorists, (they murdered, not shown in the film) but were released on an issue of judicial procedure (not accurately shown in this mosty fictional movie).

    2. And people react when the Irish call foul. They and us have every reason to mistrust the elite classes and we should have simply done more, a lot more.

    3. (the Judge): I'm trying to read, gimme a minute…
(the Expensive Actors): MY LOOORD! I'M AN INNOCENT MAAAN! JUSTICE! WHY ARE WE NOT PROSECUTING THE VILLAINS!?!
(the Judge, again): Srsly I'm on your side, just let me read please…
      (the Expensive Actors): MYYY LOOOOOOORDDD!!!!

    4. Has anyone studied the transcript of the appeal and confirmed that barrister/QC actually showed that note in court? Clearly it shows a miscarriage of justice if it was proved the note was in the file. If she took it from the file without permission, it could never be accepted as evidence, cos the chain of custody has been broken and it could have been tampered with or a fake created. This is theatre by the film maker

    5. British, American, or any other country… the entire system is broken and corrupt. "It's the best we can do," they say. Well, your best is a complete pile of shit, and exactly what I've come to expect from "civilized" people.

    6. I was doing a placement in Manchester Strangeways prison.
I was an observer in the Governor’s meeting with Paul Hill. (Training to be a Probation Officer)
Paul was serving many times Life.
Within a short period of time, I was delving into the streets of Salford and Manchester
Meanwhile Paul was out and married a Kennedy
That’s a turn around if ever I saw one

    7. Corin Redgrave stands out in a film endowed with towering talent. DD-L and Emma Thompson are always a glory, but the under-rated Redgrave as the corrupt Dixon must be credited with illuminating perfectly the whole idea of a smug, self-righteous and supremely venal police officer. He didn't miss a beat. It was a great, great performance.

    8. Trusting the justice system is like putting a wallet full of money on your dresser, leaving a hooker in your room and expecting the monies to be there when you come back. A stupid act by stupid actors!
