Zohran Mamdani Sworn In As New York City’s 112th Mayor

Zohran Mamdani has confirmed that he and his wife, Rama Duwaji, will be skipping the Met Gala this year.

In an interview with Hell Gate, Mamdani was asked about a recent “Page Six” report that he and Duwaji weren’t planning to go, responding, “That’s true.” When the reporter pressed him on why he would give up such a sweet perk of the mayor gig — unlike his predecessors, who’ve shown up in varying degrees of cringe formalwear — Mamdani managed an impressively diplomatic answer. “I love the Met. I think that it’s an incredible museum,” he said, adding, “I recently saw The Thomas Crown Affair.”

The Thomas Crown Affair, by the way, is about a billionaire who steals a painting from the Met and falls in love with the insurance investigator, so do with that what you will. Mamdani added that the Met is a “critical part of the city,” but he is focused on making New York affordable.

Perhaps the mayor simply felt that as a Democratic Socialist who’s made wealth inequality a key pillar of his campaign, it would be unwise to appear at an event famed for its ostentatious displays of wealth (particularly on a year where the Bezoses seem to be playing such a major role). So yes, I’m disappointed not to see Duwaji’s high-concept take on the “Fashion Is Art” theme, but something tells me she has better things to do with her Monday night.
