WHAT HAPPENED: By 1984, Marvin Gaye — known for iconic hits like “What’s Going On” and “Let’s Get It On” — had moved back in with his parents following struggles with substance abuse and mental health issues, per the Los Angeles Times. While he got along well with his mother, Alberta, his relationship with his father, Marvin Gay Sr., a pastor, was reportedly deeply strained.

On April 1, 1984 — just a day before Marvin’s 45th birthday — an argument between his parents escalated when Marvin intervened. According to police, Marvin “pushed the father around pretty good” during the dispute. Shortly after, Marvin Sr. retrieved a gun — one that Marvin had previously given him — and shot his son twice in the chest, killing him. Marvin Sr. ultimately received a six-year suspended sentence and five years of probation for the murder due to his age and poor health. He died in 1998 at 84 years old.
