She was raised on an island that the rest of the world forgot existed, trained from childhood to be the greatest warrior Themyscira ever produced, and told her whole life that the world beyond the water was not her responsibility. Then a pilot crashed through that carefully maintained boundary and brought the war with him. Amanda Seyfried plays Diana, an Amazon princess who has never once doubted her strength but has never been tested by anything close to what waits outside her shores. Jake Gyllenhaal plays Steve Trevor, the soldier who lands on Themyscira carrying wounds and secrets and a war that is consuming everything he knows, and who becomes the reason Diana makes a choice that cannot be undone. She leaves. She steps into a world that does not know what she is, carrying a lasso, a shield, and a belief in people that the world is going to spend the entire film trying to knock out of her. It never quite manages it.

This one sat with me for a long time before I started cutting. Nine to eleven hours went into getting Diana’s arc right, making sure every beat from the island to the battlefield felt earned and not rushed. Went deep into the source material, studied the character from the ground up. Multiple tools, multiple passes. Diana deserved nothing less.
