The first woman to run the Boston Marathon, Bobbi Gibb, now has a statue on the route – and she sculpted it herself.

  1. And in khaki shorts no less.

The next year, another female runner ran under her initials to trick the organizers, and the marathon manager tried to legit push her off the route.

  2. What an icon!!

I hate running, but plan to eventually do a marathon. If I can talk myself into it.

But first a half in August 🤢

I’m sorry, how dumb do you have to be to not think women can’t run a marathon, even back then??? Even so, women, physiologically/biology speaking, are good at endurance and efficiently metabolizing fat, so this doesn’t even make sense “physiologically”, the inverse actually…

Even today, the amount of disinformation on women’s bodies and biology is astounding. Such wildly false claims are still prevalent today…no wonder so many women and girls feel discouraged from sports.

And I hate how people acknowledge the diversity of male bodies and abilities but think all women must be exactly the same and have the exact same capabilities and all fit a cookie cutter mold.

  4. She’s such a badass. Her story inspires me to kick up my running game when I get blah about it.

Goddamn, some people really are just better than the rest of us.

Best I can do is a TV marathon and a sculpture with my kids’ Playdough.

  6. Wow, that is ground-breaking advance for women. Thank you Bobbi for leading the way. ❤️

  7. She’s a certified badass for what she did in 1966, but making a statue of yourself is a bit questionable.

People forget how recent so much social progress is. Even something as basic as letting women participate in marathons, in the work force, having their own bank accounts and credit cards.

This was in 1966. Not all that long ago. Never forget.
