Due to the scandal enveloping her, it’s unsurprising that Sarah Ferguson was absent from the late Queen’s centenary celebrations, despite the friendship that they enjoyed during the late monarch’s life.
In an interview with The Sunday Times back in 2024, Sarah reflected on her friendship with Queen Elizabeth and revealed what the final words the late monarch ever said to her were.
She told the publication: “The Queen never lost me. The best advice she gave me was the last thing she said to me: ‘Sarah, remember that yourself is good enough’. It makes me cry.”
Sarah told the anecdote after revealing that she had struggled with her eating habits and weight and following the arrival of her first daughter, Princess Beatrice. She explained: “I was an addict to food. The fact I could eat my emotions was the only thing that saved my life. I was huge, more than 14 stone when I had Beatrice in 1988, and I think I had postnatal depression. Everybody said, ‘You’re the Duchess of Pork’, and I believed my critics.”

The 66-year-old first met the late Queen when she started dating her son, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, with the pair bonding over their shared love of horses.
Even after her divorce, Elizabeth II was said to be impressed with the loyalty that she showed to Andrew and the wider royal family.

Sarah had also spoken movingly about the late monarch on the Tea with Twiggy podcast. She told the model: “My greatest mentor and… person who believes in me is the Queen – and [that] has never faltered. I absolutely admire the incredible way Her Majesty is so modern… and how flexible, and how understanding, and how forgiving and how generous.
“I think to myself that honestly my mother-in-law has been more of a mother to me than my mother. I absolutely think there is no greater mentor because, from a little girl to now, the consistency of Her Majesty has been a great honour, it’s a huge honour – makes me want to cry.”
Sarah’s current life
The former Duchess of York has been in hiding for the past several months after further revelations were made about her friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Sarah has managed to lie low since December, but last week, it was revealed that she was staying at a ski resort in Austria. The Sun published pictures of the mother-of-two emerging from a Mercedes while wearing a blue coat and a white baseball cap.
The royal had previously reported been seen in areas including Switzerland and Ireland, and reports also emerged that she had been staying with close friend Priscilla Presley in the United States, although Priscilla dismissed the claims.
