The future is unknown for Marvel’s “merc with a mouth”, but it seems unlikely that audiences will see another standalone film for some time.

Ryan Reynolds – producer, writer, and of course, the lead actor behind Deadpool in the character’s titular film series – says he does not currently envision the character leading another film on his own.

In an appearance on the TODAY Show podcast, Sunday Sitdown with Willie Geist, Reynolds was asked if he has given any thought to the future of the antihero franchise:

“I have some stuff kind of written … I don’t think I’m going to center him again. I think he’s a supporting character, you know? … (Deadpool is) a guy that’s great in a group.”

The comments come as fans continue speculating about where Deadpool could appear after the series’ latest installment, Deadpool & Wolverine in 2024.

Although no fourth Deadpool movie has been officially announced, online rumors have linked the character to Avengers: Doomsday, the next climactic crossover film for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Trailers released to date for Avengers: Doomsday have crossed a combined 1 billion views. Some of these trailers have confirmed several characters from the X-Men franchise – specifically as they appeared in the 20th Century Fox film series – will return to the big screen.

Deadpool has long been tied to the X-Men side of Marvel, given that he is a mutant-adjacent character whose stories often overlap or come into conflict with X-Men heroes, villains, and settings. Thus, the high-profile return of the mutant superheroes has fueled speculation that Reynolds’ character may make an appearance.

Reynolds has previously downplayed the rumors, saying last year that he had not been involved in filming the project.

Beyond the recent films, Deadpool has enjoyed popular appearances via Disneyland’s limited “Story Time with Deadpool” live shows in recent years.
