All this talk of Maldon, Maldon, Maldon from us today, but where is it?

If you’re following us from further afield – the town lies on the east coast of Essex, about 20 minutes’ drive from Chelmsford and half-an-hour from Colchester (or about 50 miles (80km) north-east of central London).

It’s well-known for several things – one of which is today’s event, of course.

The ancient market town (once an important Saxon port) also gives its name to Maldon Salt – a world-famous brand, with the product exported to 60 countries from its base near the River Blackwater.

And speaking of rivers, Maldon is where the rivers Chelmer and Blackwater converge before continuing on to the sea. Promenade Park, where the mud race is held, lines the bank of the Blackwater.

Oh, and before we forget, it’s also the home town of a UK Eurovision hero.

As Spaceman Sam might say to today’s mud race contestants, “as long as you’re on the ground, you’ll stick around”.
